The Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the most famous events in the Scottish calendar and is held on Edinburgh Castles Esplanade.Since its first performance in 1950 the tattoo has become an international favourite and has hosted performers from over 40 countries, from Australia to Canada, Africa to Fiji, France to Nepal. The Netherlands to the United States, along side the country's own Scottish regiments. The majority of spectators originate from foreign parts and this televised event attracts millions of viewers worldwide.
Edinburgh Castle is Britain's second most popular tourist attraction. The castle is still the headquarters of the 52nd infantry brigade and houses regimental headquarters. It is home to several military museums and is where the Scottish National War Memorial resides. Members of the Royal Artillery fire the famous one o'clock gun at the castle which is completely synchronised with the Greenwich Mean Time and the time ball in Calton Hills Nelson monument. The tattoos new attraction based at the top of the Royal Mile called the spirit of the tattoo, tells the story of the Military tattoo, featuring an exhibition, movie theatre and gift shop.
The castle is transformed with floodlights as soon as night falls which illuminates this magnificent castle turning it into the backdrop for one of the most spectacular shows on earth and one that the audience will never forget. The show is lead by the voice of the castle this commentator rallies the audience and gets them united in international brotherhood.
There are two queues that you can join to get in to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, they are Johnston Terrace, round the Hub to the Castle and Lawn Market, St Giles Street, North Bank Street and Market Street.
The Tattoo begins with an emotional display of the pipes and drums played by Scotland's finest soldiers. The show is such a blend of home and international talent so that you never know what to expect next. Perhaps there will be Jamaican steel drum bands, Chinese dancers, breath taking re-enactments of famous battles or motorcycle demonstrations. Each year is new programme but it is the pipes and drums that the visitors come to love and keep within their hearts forever.
