The Effects Of Water Damage In A Flooded Basement

By: Chris Blastoyout Home |

It is a real headache when you have a flooded basement. Although it is necessary, you will still be problematic with the expenses. Then think about the big effort and time you have to put into this. There are some pointers and precautions that can be taken to lighten things up a bit if you encounter this problem.

Pumping up all the water out from the flooded basement as soon as you can should be one of the first things to be done. But doing this could lead to a very huge mistake - as huge as making your home a totally unlivable place. Flash floods, hurricanes and other natural or man-made disasters involving water may have applied a strong pressure against the outside of your basement walls. In effect, the water inside the basement will hold it back. If you pump out the water from the flooded basement too early and disregard this factor, the collision outside the walls will be greater than the collision inside the walls - and that may make the walls collapse and the floor crack. As a result, you'll have a home that would be dangerous to live in anymore.

Staying calm when situations like this happens definitely helps in getting rid of the water from a flooded basement easier. Drain the water out and assess the damage before cleaning up anything. Consider how much water is involved and how long it's been there so you can plan your actions better and be more cautious. If large amount of water is involved in a flooded basement, asking an expert's advice is a good option.

Gear up for safety. Wear appropriate clothing for cleaning up a flooded basement. Remember that floodwater and debris can pose dangerous risks to health and all precautions are necessary including the right garment to wear or use.

Before touching or entering a floodwater zone, find a flashlight and turn the power off. Never go into a basement that has stagnant water in it unless you are absolutely sure that the electricity is out and disconnected from the outdoor. If you still have doubt, call the electric company to disconnect the power. Try to locate and re-locate all entrances of floodwater since this is important and can really save a lot of precious time. Make sure the possible entrances of where water can get through are closed off so there's no chance of your basement re-filling like a fountain.

When the water inside and outside your home subsided and receded then you can start pumping the water out of the basement. But pump the water slowly so that the foundation won't give in. If you have a sump pump, use it. Don't use gasoline-powered pumps or generators indoors.

Having a flooded basement can be a hard work but it can pay off if these simple steps are considered in assessing the clean up. It can keep you and your family safe even after fixing a flooded basement.
