In 1869, the first carpet cleaning machine was developed. Ives Mcgaffey named this machine the "weeping machine". In 1901, Cecil Booth invented a horse drawn, gas driven machine and had it patented. This machine was often used to clean businesses. The only way to clean certain parts of the carpet was to pull the hose through the windows of the building where the carpet was to be cleaned. Because of the size of this machine it would take much man power to move this machine from business to businesses. IN time though, the machine became smaller and more practical. In 1907, the first potable carpet cleaning machine was invented by James Spangler. Due to the dirt and dust being put back into the air by the machine Spangler found that this was causing to get sick and worked on the problem. He later found that using a cloth type filter with attachments kept the dirt and dust out of the air. In 1908, he had the "portable electric vacuum" patented and sold it to William H. Hoover. Hoover carpet machines are still being sold to this day and are one of the leading brands sold still to this day. In 1920, In Toledo Ohio perhaps the best part of the carpet cleaning came about; it was the Air-Way Sanitizer with a disposable filter fiber bag. In 1876, a crockery shop owner in Michigan by the name of Melville Bissell and his wife Anna patented the developed the first carpet sweeper to help him overcome the allergies he was getting from the sawdust. Later on, Melville Bissell created the carpet cleaning machine that cleaned carpet by using detergent and water. This machine was introduced to the public in the early 1950's. Today you can find Bissell products in more then 60 countries. Carpet cleaning has come a long way from the time when folks were using the horse drawn gas powered machines. You would be hard pressed to find a home without a vacuum or sweeper or that carpet steam cleaner that is so frequent today for the those tough hard to get out stains.
