For the most part, quotidian conversations are not about transcendent matters, but about simple and casual every-day topics. At one point or another, we have all had to experience what it is like to run into people with whom we have had a close friendship, and find that the lack of common interests and mutual knowledge on quotidian matters has quickly left us without topic of conversation, often causing those friendships to fade away. Unfortunately, those of us who have had the opportunity to live in various cities or countries frequently end up losing much of the everyday information, not only from friends but also from relatives; epistolary communication becomes less frequent with time. Thanks to the existence of electronic media such as â€e-mail†and social networks, as well as the simplification and reduction of telecommunication costs, the sense of distance is minimized. I remember that during our first assignment abroad in Argentina, it was extremely expensive to stay in touch with our kids, other close relatives and friends due to the high rates of long distance calling. One day, while analyzing our phone bills and discussing the possibility of reducing the frequency of international calls, my wife sternly commented: â€I think it could turn out more costly to pay a therapist if we are not able to stay in touch with our loved ones.†Needless to say, our phone bills either remained the same or swiftly increased. In spite of that, during our visits to Colombia, once satisfied the initial curiosity of our first reunions with friends and relatives, the topics and conversation fluency inevitably exhausted with those which whom we had less contact. With time, simple life events lose their importance if they are not part of a relationship that is cultivated on a regular basis. Today, it is a blessing to have access to so many technological tools. We can practically be in permanent and casual contact with our friends and family without having to worry about excessive costs. Unconcernedly, we can share all types of events with our loved ones in the moment that they occurs instead of months later, regardless of how small or insignificant they might be. Due to the greatness of internet communication, we can hear their voices, chat, and see pictures of all types of events and celebrations taken the day before or even the same day. In the telecommunications field, the advances are no less important. Nowadays, we are able to send and receive messages through our cellphones, no matter how crucial or trivial the substance of the message is. For over 4 years now, El Telefono Rojo, through IP communication, has given me the ability to not only make and receive phone calls from just about anywhere in the world by dialing a local number, but it has allowed me to do so without the outrageous costs of yesteryear. Regardless of age, it is never too late to learn whatever it is that allows us to stay in touch, bringing us closer together and letting us maintain constant communication, which doubtlessly is a fundamental element of friendship.
