The Importance Of Wetsuits In Water Sports

By: Paul Garnett Home | Recreation-and-Sports

A wetsuit is an important gear for someone who loves water sports, whether you enjoy recreational swimming, scuba diving, wakeboarding, surfing or doing races like triathlon. Wetsuits are not only important but are necessary especially during cold weathers.

People who usually love surfing wants to do surfing at any time of year and not even the cold weather can stop them, and simple inventions like the wetsuit make things like this happen.

Wetsuits are made from a flexible material called Neoprene. This material contain tiny air pockets of nitrogen that act as 'insulators' that prevent the loss of body heat when submerged in cold water.

Wetsuits work by allowing a limited amount of water into the suit. This thin layer of water will protect the wearer from losing his body heat to the surrounding cold waters. The abnormal decrease of the body's heat that leads to the malfunctioning of the basic body functions is called hypothermia. Wetsuits protect the wearer from suffering this fatal body condition.

These suits primarily function as a protection for the body. With it, sports are not limited only under the summer sun.

Aside from protecting the user in suffering from hypothermia, wetsuits also make you float easier in water. In the case of triathlon, wetsuits do not only protect the athletes from the cold but also make them float easier. When you easily float in the water, it could mean faster speed.

There are times however that people may find wetsuits not necessary. In tropical areas when the water is warm, there might be no need for these suits. However, even if not for protection, some people even prefer to wear them to protect them from injuries underwater especially in scuba diving.

Wetsuits can be very buoyant, thus using one can make you stay afloat. In a way, this might help you in some cases. For athletes, the buoyancy of wetsuits can make them go and swim faster. Triathlon athletes in particular are also protected by wetsuits during a riotous start of the race where physical contact is inevitable. In a way, the wetsuit serves as cushion against light blows.

The necessity of wetsuits primarily lies on the safety it gives to the wearer. Buoyancy and speed on the other hand are just extra benefits a wetsuit provides.
