London is notorious for the production of top rated West End shows, and The Lion King, taken from the 1994 film of the same name, has remained one of theatreland’s most popular shows since it opened at the Lyceum Theatre in 1999. The Lion King, originally a Disney animated film, tells the story of the young cub Simba, son of King Mufasa and heir to his title and to Pride Rock. Mufasa’s brother Scar is jealous of Simba, whom he believes to have robbed him of chance to be King. Scar devises a plan to put Simba in danger, causing Mufasa to risk his life to rescue him. When Mufasa is killed in the fray, Scar tells Samba to leave Pride Rock, which he does. However some years later, Simba returns to reclaim the throne that is rightfully his. In Julie Taymor’s production of the West End musical, animal costumes and giant puppets are used to create the animal kingdom in the Circle of Life, with astounding choreography and beautiful chorus singing an integral part of the show. Music for The Lion King was written by Elton john, with lyrics by Tim Rice. Hans Zimmer has created the musical score and Lebo M devised the choral arrangements. The Lion King tickets are on sale from various outlets. However if you are a visitor to London you should be careful where you purchase your theatre tickets from, as you may end up paying much more than you should. This can be very confusing given the sheer volume of ticket booths and sellers in the West End.
