As the holiday season once again rolls around, the familiar strains of well worn Christmas carols sing out from radio and television. First came the carolers walking around the small village singing Christmas carols and receiving a cup of hot beverage to warm them as they sang their way through the evening. And then came radios echoing the beautiful strains of Joy to the World as well as Silent Night. With the birth of television, however, there came a myriad of Christmas shows that have since become the holiday classics a lot of us love and enjoy every year. One of these greatest classics is Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", especially adapted for these shows. Who does not know the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge and his conversion from a vindictive and greedy old body to a good-hearted, generous and grandfatherly gentleman? Christmas carols are widely featured in any adaptation of this book. The familiar words to "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", and "Silent Night" are sung by a variety of young boys caroling, as well known as wassailing, in hopes of receiving some cakes or a warm cup of the alcoholic drink. Who could forget James Stewart in his role in "It's a Wonderful Life"? It is the story of a man, George Bailey, who is depressed and of an angel, Clarence Odbody that is sent on earth to show him all the good he has done and what life would have been for the others if he had not been there.
