The Most Effective Pike Lures

By: Home |

Fishing for pike is one of the most thrilling experiences you will ever have. Pike are very energetic and will normally put up a remarkable fight. Sometimes they will put on an amazing show by leaping into the air and turning flips.

Since they can be very aggressive when taking the bait they are considered to be a real challenge for both the novice and the experienced angler. Pike are a muscular species of fish with a long slender body. They also have a long wide snout and sharp pointed teeth and a very huge mouth. Its dorsal and anal fins are located at the back of its body near its tail. Any angler that enjoys the challenge of reeling in a strong and persistent species will enjoy fishing for pike.

When searching for pike it is important to know they hide out around the edge of weed beds and other structures. They eat frogs, small fish and other creatures that live within the water. When the baitfish swims near or into the weeds, the pike will attack. Therefore, when you present the bait close to the weeds where they are lying in wait for food, they will take it.

One problem that anglers do face quite often when fishing for pike is the fact that sometimes they can be very picky. It's for this reason that you need more than one type of lure when you go pike fishing. If they are not in the mood for one thing, then you will be prepared by having something else available. There are certain lures that the pike will respond to better than others depending on their mood.

These are listed below:

Spinnerbaits - Spinnerbaits are easy to use and they work great when fishing in weedy areas where the pike hang out. They come in a variety of flashy colors and the vibrations they make when in the water will draw the pike to them. Therefore, they are an excellent choice when it comes to catching pike.

Use bright colors blades such as orange, chartreuse and silver and use skirts with white, chartreuse, orange and yellow colors.

Spoons - Spoons are also quite popular when fishing for pike and have been for a very long time. They are so popular that they have even been referred to as the most successful pike lure designed. There are many options when it comes to spoons but the best choices are the ones that range between four to six inches in length. They should weigh at least one ounce although, the weight you choose will mainly depend on how deep and fast you want the bait to sink.

Silver and gold colored spoons work great but it is the curve of the spoon that produces the action that really gets the attention of the pike. The more of a curve the spoon has the more action it produces.

Topwater Lures - Pike are very active and they will jump high out of the water. Many times they like to grab your topwater lure on the way in or out of the water. This makes using topwater lures for catching pike both fun and entertaining. Search for the ones with the most speed and action.
