The Most Effective Treatments For Painful Feet

By: Dr Andrew Schneider Home | Health-and-Fitness

Let's face it, nothing takes the wind out of our sails like foot pain. Sore feet make us unproductive, since all we can think of is getting off our feet, and the pain becomes unrelenting. At best foot pain makes us exhausted after being on our feet all day. At worst, sore feet can cause us to find new work or cancel a vacation. There are treatments for pain in your feet that will help you enjoy life more.

Sore feet is often caused by your feet having to work harder than necessary due to inefficient foot function. If the foot is overpronated or if the arch is particularly high, an imbalance of the muscles results. Sometimes relief will come with switching to an appropriate shoe. Let's face it, flip flops are not shoes, but so many people wear them constantly for all activities. What do you wear when you are travelling through an airport? On a trip to Six Flags? Wearing an appropriate shoe that supports the foot is going to help to relieve the aching you have been suffering from.

There are times when simply wearing an approprite shoe is not sufficient to limit your aching feet. It is vital to support and correct any weakness in foot function that is contributing to your foot pain. Using an off the shelf insole is the first step to supporting your foot. Not all insoles are the same, however. The insoles that you often find in drug stores and convenience stores are almost always not effective. This is usually because they do not have enough support to be effective. A supportive insole can often be found in an athletic shoe store or at your podiatrist's office. While cushioned, they are are more stable, thereby offering more support. If an insole helps your aching feet, but it does not fully relieve your pain, you should visit with your podiatrist to see if a custom orthotic would help you further.

Another cause of foot pain are corns and calluses, which are areas of dead skin that build up in areas of high pressure. Although the body creates these callused areas to protect itself against increased pressure, it ends up adding to the pressure and causes inflammation and pain. A visit to your local pharmacy will show you how common corns and calluses are and how much they cause aching feet. The thickened skin can be managed when softened with a good quality foot cream and exfoliated with a pumi bar. The pressure should also be limited with the use of foot pads. There are many cushions available, made from different materials and in different shapes and sizes. The best foot cushions are those that work well for you. The only word of warning is to never get a medicated pad, which contains a chemical that potentially can damage the healthy skin.

Foot pain can be a involved situation. If you try some or all of these treatments and still are uncomfortable, do not hesitate to call your podiatrist. He will be able to take an objective look at your feet and help you alleviate your foot pain once and for all.
