There are literally endless possibilities when it comes to the design of charms. Each and every design is produced by one of several different manufacturing processes. Knowing what to look for will help you determine how the different charms are made as well as if they are produced by hand or by a machine. As with most types of jewelry, most of the charms that are sold in stores and online venues are made by machine, at least the main body of the charm itself is machine made. This process is similar to making a candle, molten metal is poured into a pre-set mold or cavity, which is specially prepared to prevent the metal from attaching to the sides as it cools. From the molds, the cool metal in the shape of the charm is then sent to a machine that cleans and polishes the charms. In some cases the charms will be solid, which means that the mold was filled completely with the liquid metal. In other cases the charms will be hollow or semi-hollow, which require an additional step. Hollow charms are made by two matching sides of a charm welded together to create one charm. Each side is molded separately, giving a lightweight yet very detailed type of charm. They may have designs that allow you to see through the charm such as a filigree style. For a very unique and original option, charms can also be completely handmade. This requires the jeweler or artisan to pour the charm in an individually made mold, then process and polish the charm by hand. Movable charms with parts that turn, spin or open may be crafted both by machine as well as by hand. Enameled charms that are hand painted are very beautiful and also very much one of a kind items. With each charm that is produced there are some slight variations in paint, pattern and design, which all add to the beauty of these additions to your charm collection. Some charms that have gems added to the design of the charm are also handmade, allowing each charm to be slightly different than any other. Even in modern times with computer laser engraving systems some engraving may also be done by hand, adding that truly personal touch. Any type of customization to charms is a wonderful way to make them both unique and also very special. Not all charms have to be completely handmade to be original looking and there are several personalization options available in many different types of charms. Looking for those slightly different charms is a great way to start a collection or to add to the charms you already have.
