The Seagull play in New York is set in a difficult time in Russian history. The play was written in 1895 and is considered one among the best of Anton Chekov’s works. Kristin Scott Thomas (Four Weddings and a Funeral and The English Patient) makes her much awaited Broadway debut in this production. Also making his Broadway debut in The Seagull is film actor and award winning stage actor, Peter Sarsgaard. Mackenzie Crook essays the role of the young playwright, Treplyov in this production. The Seagull Play in New York opens directly from a sold-out run in London where it broke box-office records. The Seagull will be on Broadway for a limited 14 week engagement.

The Seagull-A Story Of Unrealized Dreams And Regrets

The play which is a tragic yet funny story about love, family and theater is a revised version by Christopher Hampton who has also done the screenplays for Dangerous Liaisons, The Quiet American and Atonement. The Seagull play in New York opens with young Konstantine’s struggle to launch himself as a writer. However his life is turned upside down when his mother, a famous actress returns along with her lover. Their presence is disturbing to all the other family members causing a lot of upheaval and tension. The play goes on to reveal the emotional entanglements and disappointments of the group of artists gathered at the summer house. In some instances, the Seagull play in New York seems to resemble Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Lines from the great Shakespearean tragedy are at times quoted in the play adding to the drama.

Earlier Performances Of The Seagull

The Seagull was first staged in Petersburg at the Alexandrinsky Theatre on October 17th, 1896. An interesting fact about this show is that it was a total disaster. Vera Komissarzhevskaya, an acclaimed actress who essayed the role of Nina, ruined the show by becoming absolutely dumbfounded on stage. However the later performances of the play proved to be successful and the rest, of course, is history. The production of The Seagull play in New York began at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The play comes to Broadway after a hugely successful run at the Royal Court Theatre where it became the biggest selling production in fifty years. The play was staged by director, Ian Rickson as his farewell to the Royal Court Theatre after his seven year tenure as its Artistic Director.

The Seagull is a great work of literature and remains one of the favorites. The intense storyline and the strength of the characters are greatly appreciated even today.
