The Small Town Cuellra, Spain

This is a municipally administered town of Valencia community just at the mouth of the river Jucar. It is at a distance of about 40 kms from Valencia. This is a town which is basically dependant on agriculture. Rich vegetation is supported by the tall mountains bordering the town. Orange and rice are the important crops grown here. Although fishing was one of the other occupations of the people, now it has diminished and now Cuellra is a popular tourist spot and therefore tourism industry is flourishing here since the recent past.

Cuellra has become popular for its natural beauty. It is the apt place for those who love to live in the midst of nature; tall mountains enticing people to go on trekking, wind surfing etc which are the popular sports here. A view of the city from the top of the mountain is something which has no words to describe. The vast agricultural land presents spectacular view of the place around.Villas and apartments are located in the midst of this beautiful environment and it is the ideal place to enjoy this delightful nature. It is not only the natural beauty; the town has in its fold many places of interest for the tourists.

For example, the Moorish architecture castle located at the top of the mountain and the watch tower and the walled area around are some of the most interesting places to visit. Interestingly, this castle is located at the top of the mountain and it is believed that this castle is built to serve as a watch tower and to prevent attack by enemies. The fortress also has a sanctuary of Vergin de Castillo. It is one of the most beautiful structures of Cuellra. The Annual festival of Vergin de Castillo is also held which attract large number of devotees.Saint John’s church is another monumental structure of traditional Gothic architecture.

The bell tower is designed very artistically. This church was very recently renovated.Torre del marenyet is another watch tower built just near the river Jucar. According to historians, the watch tower is built to prevent pirates and enemies from attacking the town. Historians also say the tower is built during the 15th century.The cave of Dragut is another place of interest for the tourist. According to the history, the pirate Dragut who was heading the gang of pirates called as Berbers had attacked Cuellra. This pirate was hiding in the cave located near the town.
