The Top Ten Tips For Making Your Self-catering Holidays In Devon Go Smoothly

By: Mark Moon Home | Travel-and-Leisure

Self-catering holidays in Devon makes for a perfect holiday get-away. But before you load the car up, ready to escape to your idyllic break in the country, a quick check to make sure you've packed everything you are going to need for your self-catering holiday is wise. Getting to your location, only to find you have forgotten to pack a corkscrew or your towels could turn what would have been a happy arrival into a grumpy anti-climax. If you want to ensure that your self-catering holiday goes well then here are 10 things you should remember.

1) A clean towel. Have you checked whether the providers of the accommodation supply fresh towels in your apartment? There's nothing worse than jumping out of the shower, ready for a ramble, and finding that there is no means to dry off. Either call ahead to double check if towels are supplied, or take your own, just to be sure.

2) A sharp kitchen knife. Buying a fresh piece of organic beef from one of Devon's fantastic organic farms is the perfect way to experience the exceptional quality of local produce in this region. If you're planning on doing this kind of cooking during your break, have you remembered your favourite knife? A Swiss Army penknife just isn't going to work as well!

3) Have you remembered to pack the salt and pepper? You don't need to take a full set of condiments †just a couple of small plastic press-seal bags topped up with salt and pepper will do.

4) Although the climate in Devon is pretty clement all year round, the temperature can drop quite quickly on a clear night, particularly on Dartmoor and Exmoor. Have you brought an extra blanket just in case?

5) During the summer temperatures in Devon, particularly along the coast, can rise to Mediterranean levels. You can get sunburnt as easily in Torquay as you can in Spain. Ensure that you have remembered to pack your sun tan lotion.

6) Although you may have checked the car before you left, there is always a chance that your battery will fail on you whilst you are away. In a situation like this, it pays to have remembered to pack a set of jump leads, in case you need to ask someone to help you jump-start your car battery back into life.

7) Even on holiday, there is always the chance of a bumped knee or scraped elbow, particularly if you have children. Whenever travelling, it is very sensible to make sure you have a portable first aid kit in the car.

8) Although satellite navigation systems are becoming more common, they often do not have detailed information of more remote parts of the country. To help you navigate your way around the lanes of Devon, it is a good idea to keep a map of the local roads in the glove compartment.

9) Almost everyone now owns a mobile phone. Even if you don't want to take yours just in case the office decides to phone you on your holiday, it can be essential if you break down on a remote moorland road, where the nearest phone may be several miles away. Pack your mobile phone and don't forget the charger.

10) You may have sorted out your spending money in cash, but if a sudden emergency crops up, such as a breakdown or accident, you may need some extra money. Make sure you take a credit card or spare cash in case of emergencies.
