The United Way Reaches Out To Those In Need

By: Josh at LOJS Home | Cancer | Mesothelioma-Cancer

Alabama United Way Officials are trying to bring awareness to the non profit’s 2-1-1 initiative. The program has been available in Alabama for 10 years but has been grossly under used and in times of economic hardship it is important to know assistance is there, especially if you are tying to undertake the costs that come along with being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The 2-1-1 program works like this. You can dial 2-1-1 and once you do that the United Way will help connect you with a number of different social services. They have helped people get set up with food stamps, food pantries, financial assistance with their mortgage or rent, health services, and transportation needs.

Take Robert Bondurant for example. A 66-year old man from Montgomery, Alabama, he had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. He quickly began to realize that his health was taking up much of his finances. The 2-1-1 program helped purchase prescriptions he needed and also got him in touch with the â€Meals on Wheels programâ€. When his utility bills became hard to take care of they even helped there. "They stepped in and took care of my light bill for a couple of months,"

The 2-1-1 service may not be available in your area, but the United Way more than likely is. If you’d like to learn more about a United Way program in your area you can do so by going to their website, liveunited.com
