Things To Consider In Small Kitchen Floor Plans

By: Gen Wright Home | Business

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges that any designer would face is a small space. It is indeed more convenient to work with bigger spaces than with smaller ones. However, with today's nonconventional architectural designs, most designers are faced with smaller spaces, most especially small kitchens.

When dealing with small kitchen designs, there are a number of things to consider. Some of these considerations include the lay-out, functionality, and arrangement. Undeniably, the counter space and cabinet space are two of the important spaces to consider in designing kitchens.

Planning the most appropriate lay-out is vital in the total effect of any kitchen. Among the most popular lay-puts are the U-shape, L-shape, G-shape, and Single-wall. It is important to be familiar with each of these lay-outs in order to choose the right one for your kitchen.

The U-shape plan is an efficient and versatile lay-out. This plan actually offers three walls to be considered in placing workstations. Storage and counter space provided by three sides actually maximizes efficiency. Moreover, this dead-end floor plan ensures that traffic does not interrupt the work triangle.

On the other hand, the L-shape plan basically puts two workstations on one wall and a third one on the adjacent wall. This lay-out is more efficient than the U-shape, most especially if the main workstations are located close to the crook of the L. However, arrangement of workstations is critical in this type of kitchen lay-out.

The G-shape plan is a version of the U-shape plan with the same storage options that are provided on the three sides of the kitchen. The main difference between the two though is the peninsula or the partial fourth wall of additional cabinets that is provided by the G-shape plan.

Finally, the Single-wall kitchen lay-out is the most ideal plan for smaller homes. The work triangle in this lay-out is less like a triangle and more of a work line because of the kitchen zones along one wall.

Anyone of these lay-outs can actually be used in small kitchen designs although the single-wall plan is the most practical lay-out to use. Other than the lay-out though, it is also important to consider the functionality of the kitchen. As such, the counter space and storage space should be critically considered. Regardless if the space is smaller, a kitchen can still be very functional if the storage and cabinet spaces are well planned.

Moreover, when you are designing a small kitchen, it is also vital to plan out a very good arrangement most especially with the workstations. Since smaller kitchens have space limitations, planning the arrangement can be pretty challenging. However, with the right arrangement though, small kitchen floor plans can actually be maximized. Arranging the counter and cabinets in such a way that no space is wasted is indeed very helpful in small kitchen floor plans.
