Things To Do In Malta - Photos Malta

By: Claire Zammit Xuereb Home | Home-and-Family | Holidays

This article provides information about Malta and some of the best Malta sightseeing places that are worth visiting during your Holiday in Malta.

In July 2008, a large group of amateur and professional photographers from all over the world travelled to Malta for a few days of pure photography that took them to all corners of the Maltese island. This event was organized by iStock, the leading member-generated image and design community which offers over 4 million royalty-free images by over 66,000 artists, who took advantage of Malta’s beauty and historic sites for their portfolio and with good reason!

Malta Sightseeing

Although so small, Malta has many features to offer the lens. Firstly and perhaps most obvious is the Mediterranean sea, with its various shades of turquoise and deep blue that provide the most breath-taking seascapes. Due to the diversity of the island, one can photograph both sandy and rocky beaches as well as rough coastal features, including cliffs, from where one can view the sea from a variety of heights and angles, depending on the chosen locality. At the practically uninhabited island of Comino for instance one can photograph our most beautiful bay, known as the â€Blue Lagoon’ for its incredible colour. In Gozo there is one beach in particular known as â€Ramla l-Hamra’ (the Red Sand) which is unique due to the reddish hue of the sand that provides another interesting seascape, particularly at sunrise or sunset. Another spectacular sight is the azure window in Dwejra, Gozo which includes a scenic rock arch set against a Mediterranean seascape. The variety of reefs, wrecks and general character of the Mediterranean Sea that surrounds Malta is also perfect for underwater photography.

Maltese landscapes, although fewer, are not lacking and can be found further inland or along the cliffs and coast. The best time of year in this case would be spring, when the air is cooler and the hills are greener. However, to get the best view of the island in the form of a landscape or seascape it is possible to charter a small airplane for 2 to 4 people that can fly at a perfect distance for you to obtain a panoramic photograph of the Maltese islands.

Maltese Traditions

The unique character of the Maltese population, together with their well-rooted Maltese traditions, also provides for unique lifestyle shots within the towns. These would include villages such as Marsaxlokk, the old fishing village, where one can photograph the traditional Maltese boat known as the â€Luzzu’, as well as the hectic Sunday market. The frequent festas - with their colourful firework displays †are another unique feature, not to mention the traditional craft-making. With regards to the photography of buildings and architectural features, the island is filled with a variety of churches and chapels set against both rural as well as built-up backgrounds, together with the spectacular prehistoric temples, of which the oldest is found in Gozo; and finally the bastions and old cities of the Knights of St. John, namely Valletta and Mdina.

Malta Photo Experience

In recent years new Malta photo tours have been created to cater for a more photographic experience of the Maltese islands. www.uphotomalta.com for instance, is a company specifically designed for both professionals as well as amateurs who would like to explore the islands through their lens. They provide a selection of three different tours exclusively open to 8 guests that visit secluded parts of the Island known only to the locals as well as the most popular and breath-taking spots on the islands, taking some of the best possible photos along the way!
