The Eurovision song contest is a yearly singing contest for European countries. Each country sings their song choice in front on millions of viewers and then at the end the public cast votes on who should win. As of recent years the public have somewhat been voting for countries that are closer to them, it seems to be a bit more as a political vote rather than a singing competition. While watching the results show you can guess almost where each country will give their points too. Terry Wogan has been the commentator for the UK while the Eurovision song contest is on. I think sometimes that his humour and spark is the only thing that keeps the British public watching. He did at the end of 2008's Eurovision contest hint whether he should in fact carry on with the show as it was turning more into a bloc voting procedure and ruining the tradition. In 2008 the UK only got 14 points from an excellent performance and song by Andy Abraham, who was in fact the runner up on the X Factor. Terry Wogan told viewers that "Russia were going to be the political winners from the beginning," But all is not doom and gloom the show is not coming to an end yet for Britain, new commentator Graham Norton will be taking over from Sir Terry Wogan. Norton has described his role as an amazing job. But with talent contests at full swing now how long until we see the end of Eurovision? Every year the show is being reduced in viewers, Last year's contest was seen by 8.77 million, a total which includes those who recorded the contest to watch it later. As this year was almost a million down with 7.1 tuning in. I think with the popularity of shows such as X Factor, Britain's Got Talent and American Idol we are going to see the Eurovision slip down and to be frankly honest I just cannot see major singers taking part in the contest unless something is done quite quickly to rectify the situation. Let's not let a show that has been on TV for decades, and in absolute honestly a European tradition slip into a state of recession. Things should be done to improve the show so that every country, whether big or small has the chance to win by performing a great song, which will be remembered and not forgotten within a month or so.
