Personal computing has become a significant part of the fabric of society as so many people depend on computers for activities from business to pleasure-related. With this dependency comes a great concern for protecting personal data from the threats and problems that can arise from hackers, malware, and ordinary computer malfunction. Since there are a lot of viruses being produced daily which can steal information from a computer (like passwords, identities and sensitive information) and be used for profit and criminal activities, it becomes evermore critical to know how to protect a personal computer. Among the intruders that can destroy a system are some viruses that delete an entire hard drive's data. In order to respond to these types of problems, it is essential to use computer security techniques to avoid any kind of data breach. Most people worry about these types of problems, but in my experience, if one has the right computer data protection techniques in place, he or she will not have to worry. The truth is computer data protection is all about prevention and security measures. Prevention of data loss through regular backup, and security to protect potential breaches of an operating system, can make all the difference in the world. There are several simple techniques which one can use to easily protect computer data: 1. Security Programs A frontline protection for any personal computing system is a quality security software. A little online research can help one discover the best security software for his or her personal needs. The Internet contains much in the way of useful information to help one narrow down the search for an appropriate type of security software. Certain "computer geek" forums lend themselves to discussions on the best ways of securing a computer for particular computing styles and levels of knowledge. Software download sites are also useful places in discovering the popularity of a security software as they provide a forum for looking at number of downloads and examining reviews which address the pros and cons of any given software. The addition of this information can help the consumer make quality choices in regards to computer data protection systems and security measures. Antivirus software programs are the first line of defense against computer attack. However, there are other programs which protect files and secure computers from attack including password encryption programs, anti-spyware programs and firewalls. A number of these computer security programs can be found for free or for free time-limited trials on many of the larger software download sites on the Internet. The installation and regular updating of such software can provide the user with a significant layer of security. 2. Computer Backup Regular system back-ups are also another critical component in preventing data loss. In case of a system failure, windows can create a "system-restore" by actually saving to a certain previous point in a computer's "lifetime" and then going back and restoring the system to the earlier point by using the command "system restore." However, in order to adequately ensure the protection of computer data, most people should consider investing in a portable hard drive to which they can backup their important files and thereby ensure that their personal data is secured outside of their computer system in case of a performance problem. Some people actually store these portable hard drives in bank vaults or other locations away from their home office in order to provide more protection in case of an emergency such as fire or flood. For some people, the use of an online system where personal files are backed up to a server online (for a fee) provides a protection plan that ensures a bit of relief. However, for many, the idea of releasing personal files to such backup services, is abhorrent and consequently this choice is often not the most popular choice for many people who are interested in protecting their computer systems from data loss. Perhaps that is why portable hard drives and flash drives, etc, appear to be popular back-up modalities for many people. 3. Routine Updates This is just an integration of the first two techniques. Most people actually create system backups and use security software but the problem that I usually see is that people do not update these things regularly. If your computer data is always being stored and updated, make sure that you do these things in a routine fashion. especially for the hard drive backups. I actually lost a lot of data due to poor system backups and it cost me a lot of time and money, so I highly advise that you constantly update your information in your backup hard drives. Overall, I think that it is apparent that computer data protection is a necessary activity and that doing it regularly will prevent any potential data loss problems from occurring. And as well, it will allow you to worry less and sleep better, since you know you have a good contingency plan - no matter what happens to your computer.
