Tips For Eating Out Safely With Food Allergies

By: Protect Your Child From Life-Threatening Food Allergies Home | Home-and-Family

Im Jane Meagher, creator of Protect Your My Child From Life-Threatening Food Allergies, an

innovative and comprehensive video learning system for parents of food-allergic children, and I€™m a

parent, just like you, of a child with severe food allergies. Here's a few quick and helpful tips to help

you protect your child from the everyday dangers of food allergies.

Here's three helpful hints for eating out safely with your food-allergic child.
First, prior to visiting a restaurant or fast food establishment, set proper expectations for your child.

Discuss in advance that there may be certain menu items that your child cannot eat. You might be

thinking: I don't have to bring this up because my child knows this already. Well, that may be true,

but I've found that sometimes it's better to give a gentle reminder such as the following statement:
"It will be fun to go to this restaurant an dto eat ou tas a family, but you know honey, everything may

not be safe, and you know we won't be getting dessert at the restaurant, but when we get back we

can have those special safe brownies we just got." You might be surprised at how proper expectation

setting can have a huge impact on your child's attitude.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, do two things immediately. First, ask to see a menu right away so

that your child can review the menu and start selecting a few possible foods. This way you don't

have to ask detailed questions about the whole menu, but just about the safety of the ingredients and

cross-contact possibilities for a few menu items your child is actually considering.

Second, ask to speak with a manager right away. This allows you to get a jumpstart on asking

questions and allows the manager the necessary time to speak with you and then research the

answers, potentially even before you and your party are ready to order food. Waiting to do this until

you are ready to order may cause delays and frustrations for you, your child, and the rest of the dining

party, or the restaurant staff.

I'd love to give you a free video called Ten Things To Do So Your Food-Allergic Child Can Eat Out
