Tips For Selecting A Cello School

By: Pamelina Siow Home | Arts-and-Entertainment

The process of selecting a good cello music school is not as simple as just opening a newspaper classified ads section and calling the first teacher or school that you see there. You have to consider some things like your requirements and you have to have answers to some questions.

For instance do you know how professional the school is? Do advanced students get the opportunity to perform, and is there some type of exchange program for them?

These are just a few of the questions you should address, and here are a few tips to help you in selecting a cello school.

1. Find out what kind of experience the cello music school has. You need to know the history of a school and know how long the school has been in existence. This will help you determine how successful the school is or isn't.

2. What school and training did the teachers attend? You should also determine where the teachers come from and where they have played or taught before. You need to know what their educational background is.

3. Ask about graduate students, and where some have continued their studies. A successful cello school will also have successful graduate students.

4. Obviously, you must find out about cost. There are schools that charge more than others, but these are the really good schools with more to offer their students. Essentially, they have more to offer their students.

5. Are the cello classes given in groups or individually? This is not to say that group classes are less valuable than individual classes, in many cases a group class is offered for a reason, and this is probably done in the students best interest, at least this is the case in a good school.

6. If group classes are recommended find out how many students are placed in that group. These can be beneficial, however, too large a group can hamper learning.

7. Ask about teaching methods. The really good cello schools will proudly answer any queries about their teaching methods.

8. You should also perform a check on the director's qualifications and credentials.

9. Consider that a school that focuses on developing good cellists will also have a lot of connections with music management companies.

These are the most important questions that you need answers for, so don't be shy to ask them. Most music schools will be more than glad to give you all the information they can.

They will usually tell you of the types of certifications they offer, the admission requirements, whether there is an audition requirement, types of students they have, and their faculty qualifications. They are also proud of their students and will tell you of all the performances students participate in.

It's important that you investigate a music school well. You don't want to invest a lot of money in a company that will be gone in a few months, or one which invests very little in its faculty thereby offering very little to its students.
