When using heat styling tools on your hair, it is important to take the necessary steps to protect your hair or you could end up with some very undesirable results. Here are some tips to use flat iron.

Use the hair iron only after you have cleaned your hair. Actually, it can be dangerous to use it before you clean your hair because dirt or grease left in the hair will be cooked by the heat of the hair iron and the damage made is inevitable.

It is recommended to start with the drying process, and to dry hair swaying downwards from the scalp. This is specifically for flattening the cuticles downwards that helps in the styling process and to increase hair shininess.

Make sure you keep the width of the section around one to two inches while also keeping the section very thin. It will help your results even though it might add a few minutes to getting your style completed.

Lift your hair up about half way and pin up the top layers so they are out of the way; you should always straighten the bottom layers of your hair first.

Draw a thin strip of hair - about 1" - through the plates. You don't need to press the plates together and you should never stop mid-way through. You can use sectioning clips if you need to.

Another important thing to remember is the temperature control. The majority modern digital styling tools contain automatic temperature fixing facility to aid you to control the heat so that you will not burn your hair. According to the type of your hair, set the temperature.

To avoid the damage caused by the flat iron you must apply deep conditioning once a week to your hair.Never ignore to use heat protection spray to overcome the over heat for straightening.

It is also important to choose a product that suits your hair type. Choose the appropriate heating plate that matches your hair type. Variable heat settings, universal voltage, light weight, professional 360 degree swivel cord etc is also important.

Do not flat iron (or heat style) your hair every day. The more frequently you do it, the more damage you are causing to your hair. It has been recommended by dermatologists to not straighten your hair more than three times a week.

Apply the flat iron with the fine-toothed comb to all sections of your hair without leaving any single strand of hair. Then you can achieve an ultra straight, super silky and smooth hair.

These may seem to be a lot of steps to take at first, but as you practice, it will all come easily and quickly, while giving you the professional salon look from your own home each time you walk out the door!
