Top Seven Boating Lakes In The United States

By: Roberto Bell Home | Travel-and-Leisure

If you are planning a boating vacation then there certainly is no shortage of lakes to choose from in the United States. However, just a handful of these lakes are truly the best for your boating vacation. If you want to take full advantage of your fun boating adventure then you need to try the following lakes during your next trip.

First on the list is Houghton Lake in Michigan. Here you will find the largest inland lake in the entire state of Michigan. It is also one of the largest inland lakes in the United States. The lake is known as a popular resort sport and offers year round fishing and water sports to fit any need. During the winter you can even take part in ice fishing.

Second is Lake Tarpon in Florida. Here you will be able to enjoy fifty-two square miles of water about ten miles west of Tampa. For the fisherman there is a large population of largemouth bass. In fact this is an excellent fishing destination no matter what you want to catch due to the two large tributaries from South Creek and Brooker Creek.

Third is in Minnesota. In the northern part of the state there is Red Lake, which is the second largest natural freshwater lake in the United States. This lake has two sections divided by a peninsula, which is home to a Native American community. This lake has some great boating options due to its size and quality.

Then there is Lake Geneva located southwest of Milwaukee in Wisconsin. This lake has become a popular resort destination because of the easy railroad access to and from Chicago. It is also an excellent destination for those who want to take advantage of some outdoor recreation. No matter what type of boating you enjoy you will find it on this lake.

Fifth on the list is Clear Lake in beautiful California. This is the largest natural lake located entirely in the state. This lake is fed by many streams, but only has one outlet at Cache Creek. A dam on this creek regulates the capacity and outflow of the lake. This is thought to be one of the oldest lakes in North America. The large capacity of this lake makes it an excellent boating destination since the depth will stay the same all year long.

Next there is Lake Travis in Texas. This reservoir is located along the Colorado River. This lake was created once the Mansfield Dam was built in 1942. It has become a popular boating destination due to its large capacity, making it one of the biggest of seven reservoirs within what is called the Highland Lakes.

Lastly South Carolina has Lark Marion which offers 315 miles of shoreline. You can easy get your boat in and out of the lake due to the several public boat ramps available. Some of the largest fish can be found in this lake include striped bass, trout, white perch, white bass, crappie, channel fish, Arkansas blue catfish and bream.
