Totally Natural Care For Acne With Immediate Results

By: Liz Wagner Home | Health-and-Fitness | Acne

Acne is often considered to be a condition that only affects teenagers, now although many teenagers will suffer with acne when they are going through puberty, it is not uncommon for men and women into their 30's and 40's to still be suffering with acne. The majority of sufferers will be in the age range of 12 to 25. 80% of the population between 11 and 30 will be plagued by acne at some time.

As with all conditions the severity of acne can vary although generally acne is restricted to affecting the face, neck, shoulders, arms chest and back. Acne shows no reverence to ethnicity and will affect all skin colours.

Sebum, an oily substance, is produced in the small sebaceous glands below the surface of the skin to keep the skin smooth and supple. Sebum escapes to the skins surface through hundreds and thousands of tiny pores on the skins surface. Acne is caused when these sebaceous glands become over active and secret too much of the oily sebum onto the surface of our skin. A natural hormone, testosterone, found in both men and women can affect the sebaceous glands and how much sebum they produce. At the same time as this over production of sebum the hair follicles do not shed their dead cells correctly which form a block in the follicle and a build up of excessive oil and this is when blackheads and whiteheads form.

In many people this is as far as acne goes, but for others this becomes the ideal breeding ground for Propionibacterium acnes to grow. A bacterium which leaves normally on the skin but in this excess of oil starts to breed and multiply and feeds off the sebum and in turn creates other substances which generate a response from the body's immune system. This inflames the skin and creates the redness associated with spots. In more severe 'inflammatory acne' cysts are created beneath the surface and when the cysts mature and rupture they spread the infection into nearby skin tissue, which can in turn result in scarring.

There are many myths associated with acne including that acne is contagious, acne is caused by eating fatty foods and chocolate and also that washing more will not help!

There are a number of things that can aggravate acne and make matters worse, which include:-
"Picking and squeezing spots - this causes inflammation and can cause scarring.
"In some people stress will aggravate the condition.
"In women outbreaks and eruptions can be timed in with the menstrual cycle and hormone changes.
"Steroids can cause acne as a side effect.
"Some medications can cause an increase in acne activity.
"Some contraceptive pills may make acne worse.

Acne can cause severe distress in its sufferers especially in the early teens when going through puberty. There is no cure for acne but the main aim is to control the acne and reduce it to a bear minimum.

It is important to keep the acne skin clean so washing with emu oil soap twice a day is of prime importance. It is vital to keep moisture in our skin for healthy looking skin which is achieved by the hand made emu oil soaps as they help to clean the skin and lock in moisture at the same time. Also emu oil being non-comedogenic (won't block pores) you are removing the chance of blocking up more pores and creating more blackheads, whiteheads pimples etc. Also emu oil is anti-bacterial and bacteriostatic so you are also gently, naturally medicating your skin and producing an environment that the bacterium cannot breed and live in so you are reducing the chance of any scarring and outbreaks. Whilst washing your face it is best to use warm not hot water. Hot water will increase the production of oils and increase the chances of blocked pores due to the excess of oil. It is also advisable to use a face loofah when washing as this will remove dead cells and 'polish' the skin leaving it refreshed and youthful and in removing the dead cells you are diminishing the chances of blocking the pores. The dead cells if left will tend to block the opening of the pores and increase the occurrence of blackheads etc.

After washing, in order to keep the skin moisturised it is advisable to use a small amount of emu oil moisturiser or the pure Australian emu oil or the Australian emu oil with essential oils added. Pure Emu oil dabbed on eruptions will make them dry out and disappear without scarring.

Consistent and continued use of the Australian Emu Oil Products will control acne, and will also help to minimise and reduce scarring from older outbreaks. Unlike many other product ranges the effects of using the Australian Emu oil handmade soaps and oils and skin care products can be seen within a few days of starting the regime and as time passes the effects become more and more noticeable.
