A burn is a very traumatic injury, cause by fire, chemicals, steam, electricity or any other form of heat transfer to the skin (our biggest organ). Burns on less then 10% of the body surface is considered minor. An entire hand is 1% of the body surface. While many burn injuries are serious enough that the victim will require professional medical attention, there are a number of easy and readily available home remedies that can be used to treat minor burns. You should familiarize yourself with home burn remedies so that you can treat these minor yet agonizing injuries on your own. By applying these techniques, you can ease the pain, reduce tenderness, lessen the chance of scarring, and facilitate a speedy recovery. There are three burn classifications: First-degree, Second-degree, and Third-degree. First-degree burns are surface burns that are painful but will heal quickly (5 to 6 days) with no scarring. These burns can be treated by running cool water on it and letting them heal on their natural course. When an individual experiences a third-degree burn, the burns may be numb. Generally speaking, any pain that is being complained of is due to second-degree burns that have also been caused in the same area. Depending on the cause of the burn, the degree or severity of the burn may not be even across the entire affected area. This is what accounts for second-degree or first-degree burns in the area as well. First and foremost, if the burn is severe; that is it is swelling, blistering severely, or covering a large area of skin; waste no time in getting to a medical facility for proper treatment. Severe burns †those that are second or third degree - can be extremely dangerous so the quicker the first aid burn treatment, the better. Cool the burn. Flush the burn with cold water until the pain stops as long as 20 to 30 minutes. The heat from a burn continues to penetrate your skin even after you have removed the source of the heat. Cool water can help prevent the burn from going deeper. If using running water is too painful, try a cold-water compress. Speed healing with C. While it won't help reduce the pain, taking 500 to 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day can help a burn. It is recommended taking the mineral zinc. Take 25 to 5o milligrams of zinc a day after you burn yourself and continue until the burn heals. Bear in mind that high levels of zinc can be toxic and should be taken only under the guidance of your physician. Aloe is well known for its soothing properties on sunburns, and other burns, as well. If you have an aloe plant in your home, simply cut off a branch at the thick end and rub the gel on your burn. Not only will aloe provide quick pain relief, but it will also help your burn heal must faster than without it. Remember to play it safe to avoid burns especially within the home since most general accidents happen here. Be smart when you're out in the sun. We may not think that a sunburn can be severe but, if you've ever seen or had a nasty one, you know how painful they can be. The proper UVA and UVB sunscreen and UV protecting sunglasses will help curb bad burns and sun damage.Taking the proper care when treating burns and getting medical help when needed will not only allow burns to heal faster but also lessen the risk of infection.
