Tunnel Carpel Syndrome

By: jannet Home | Health-and-Fitness | Alternative-Medicine

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the many repetitive stress injuries that happen in case of computer users. In CTS, you face problems in your wrist. Carpel tunnel is a narrow passageway found in your wrist. In this passageway, you will find the median nerve and nine tendons, which offers you the ability to feel. The carpel is the collective name for the group of small bones (CARP) which are found at the heel of our hand. They rest in two rows of 4 bones. These bones together form many joints and in part allow our hands to mould around objects. They are held together in an arch and with a thick band of fascia (connective tissue) that runs from side to side of the wrist where they form a tunnel.

CTS is the most common peripheral nerve compression syndrome, and it is commonly held that any type of continual repetitive use of the hands, especially where the fingers are constantly being pressed to flex a lot, triggers this very painful ordeal. Peripheral nerves are the nerves in your body that are outside of both your brain and the spinal cord and there are actually more than 100 different types of peripheral disorders. Carpal tunnel syndrome is an amalgamation of factors that increase pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal tunnel. For some it's due to a congenital predisposition while other factors may be trauma or injury to the wrist causing swelling such as sprain or fracture, too much wear of the pituitary gland, hypothyroidism and rheumatoid arthritis, work stress, the development of a cyst or tumor in the canal etc.

Wear a splint or brace. Preferably wear the brace/splint during activities where the carpal tunnel symptoms flare up. Wearing the brace/splint at night when you go to sleep is also an effective method to conquering carpal tunnel syndrome since your wrist is usually bent at night further aggravating your carpel tunnel nerves. Splints and braces can be unconformable to wear but they can relieve pain if worn for 2 weeks. Hand and finger movements repeated over and over for a long time, especially when the wrists are lower than the fingers, cause inflammation around the median nerve, which runs through a narrow tunnel of bone and ligament in the middle of the wrist. Since bones and ligaments have no give, this puts pressure on the nerve and causes the symptoms.

The basis of the problem is often a diet that is lacking in sufficient fresh fruit and vegetable and contains too many refined carbohydrates and sugary and salty foods. This means that there needs to be the adoption of a healthy diet. Vegetables, particularly the green and root vegetables should be eaten in abundance. This should include: cabbage, celery and turnip. The condition is also associated with food allergies and any food allergies need to be determined and eliminated. While you are working on computers (or any other repetitive operations), make sure that you take frequent breaks and stretch your wrists and neck when you do. One exercise that you can do is to rest your forearm on the desk or table. With the other hand take the resting hand’s fingertips. Pull back gently for 3 - 5 seconds. Repeat with the other hand.
