Tussle Between Hyundai’s Twins

By: carazoo.com Home | Automotive | Cars

It’s incredible to believe that Hyundai’s twins, Hyundai i10 and i10 kappa, stands against each other in the competitive Indian car market.

Indian car manufacturers are rolling out new cars almost every month in order to establish a stronger base and beat the competition in their respective car segments. Though the competition in Indian market is escalating with more and more numbers of cars coming in, no one ever thought that Hyundai’s twins will compete with each other.

The three main car characteristics where the tussle between Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i10 kappa starts are engine, transmission, and fuel efficiency.

Under the Hood

The original Hyundai i10 is a great and successful car but the introduction of kappa engine gave a completely new look to Hyundai i-series and people started moving towards the new launch. The 1.2L kappa engine is a DOHC engine technology that delivers more power and torque as compared to the old 1.1L iRDE’s SOHC engine.

The aluminium construction of the new engine also adds extra charm to the kappa series. This kind of construction makes the engine lighter that reduces the pressure on the car engine and delivers better performance and ride quality. In addition, the new type of construction also makes the kappa engine more durable, rugged and slightly more fuel efficient than the original i10 engine.

Gear Performance

It is strongly believed that the i10 kappa is equipped with a better transmission than the iRDE engine. The new car has a taller gearing which gives a top speed of 4.3 kmph, 9.9 kmph, 14.2 kmph, and 7.3 kmph faster the old car in first, second, third, and fourth gears respectively. This makes the new car a better choice for highways as overtaking will be a breeze with better pulling and faster top speed. Even the roll-on times are substantially better on an acceleration of 80-100 kmph and 100-120 kmph.

Fuel Efficiency

Taller gearshifts and stronger car engine of the kappa series delivers a marginal increase in the fuel efficiency. According to the test results and reports revealed by the industry resources, the new engine goes nearly about 1 km extra per litre of fuel as compared to the older engine. This difference of 1 km hardly influences the car’s drivability on congested city roads. So, when it comes to city driving, Hyundai i10 with the iRDE engine proves to be technically better. If in case, the car is used daily to commute the entire family from one place to other, the fuel efficiency of i10 will sharply drop, leaving a big difference in fuel efficiency between the two i10 engines. Under the same circumstances, there would not be much drop in the fuel efficiency of kappa engine.
