Twitter has become popular in the last year and the question comes up for why internet users should become a member of Twitter. Besides the obvious use of social media for connecting with friends and relatives that you want to catch up with, the popularity of Twitter revolves around networking for business.

Basically, Twitter could be useful to advertise and promote your business, get you online popularity and help you connect with potential online customers. When used properly and professionally, Twitter could be a useful online tool to help your business succeed online.

When you build up a large following, Twitter makes it easy to advertise for your business by posting a single link. Then, if it's good enough, you might get retweeted by other Twitter users which sends it out to their circle of followers. Those followers can also retweet your links, therefore starting a viral chain of promotion for your business and give you exposure on the web.

Everything that is "tweeted" on Twitter is indexed by Google. Therefore, if you want to have your website known for your business niche, posting links that have to do with your industry could get you more recognition with search engines. Offer information about what you do and news in your business to invite other small business website owners to follow you. These new connections could offer you tips and updates you may have overlooked, and possibly bring you customers.

Search on the internet for websites, blogs and information that those in your business niche would find useful. Post these links in Twitter for your followers to view and become interested in your products and services. Take advantage of this opportunity to promote your business and obtain an edge over your competition.

When creating a Twitter account, use your business name as your user ID, not your actual name. Using your company name gives it more popularity online every time it's used.

When interacting with your potential customers online, you should define an attractive professional online presence. Be sure that your profile photo gives your online peers a positive first impression which urges them to conduct business with you. Use an attractive background that promotes your professional business demeanor. Remember, your photo is the first thing someone will see, so make sure you project a positive first impression.

The general rule I tend to adhere to is to keep self-promotion on Twitter down to 20 percent. This means that for every 10 tweets you post on Twitter, allow only 2 of them be about your own business. The reason for this is because many Twitter users come across as spam, and you don't want to be associated with them. You want Twitter users to perceive you as a philanthropic contributor to their social networking community.

Simply by investing some time into Twitter and forming a large following, you could get more people online to visit your website. More website visitors means more potential customers that may need your products and services.
