Two Secrets For Beginning Golfers You Shouldn't Miss.

By: Bruce Baird Home | Recreation-and-Sports

If you are planning to join the golfing world, consider these few comments. First off, Do not assume that you can be proficient in a few days or few hours.

The fundamentals of the golf game include considerably more than just striking a small white ball and climbing back into a golf cart. Probably many people view the sport in this manner. That is an error! The swing mechanics of golf are learnable by most reasonably athletic persons. However you must master certain concepts and develop confidence in the golfing fundamentals in order to improve your game on a continuing basis. An evaluation of your abilities, existing skill level and learnability are crucial to your golf enjoyment. Many characteristics of the golfing experience are not user friendly, and most golf swing principles are counter-intuitive. Only professional lessons will assure you of the knowledge needed to be successful. An instructor who promotes confidence building in you and your game is your best guide to success..

Golf is to a large degree a mental game, more so than most action sports. Be prepared to use your mental skills to a degree you haven't dreamed of. In fact, professionals and amateurs alike have long used special non-physical techniques in most sports such as tennis, archery, skiing. When you can apply specific mental skills to your golf game you enhance your improvement immesurably.Make the mental discipline the best part of the game. The finest instructors show you how to develop these capabilities. Even novices can achieve outstanding results.

A significant and all important part of your early instruction may well be at a formal golf school.Golf schools in particular with their 2-3 day curriculum of instruction can jump start your understanding of the basics. Attending golf schools and taking professional golf lessons will enhance the process.

The physical aspects of the golf swing and the mental techniques actually must be integrated to have the best success in your learning curve. Whether you attend golf school or a driving range for your lessons look for instructors who are student-driven, not method driven or what may be called "the copycatschool" Strive to make your golf swing intuitive, non mechanical from the start and you will see better results as your swing becomes l more a part of your own personality. One golf school has a slogan-Your Golf Signature Written Boldly. That is a simple, but outstanding way to view your own experiences.

The list of the fundamentals of the golf swing need not be overly complicated. In their simplest form the GASP system is most agreed upon for the beginning basics. G is for grip A is for alignment S is for stance and P is for Posture. A correct understanding of these basics will assure you of a good foundation. The best part- you can master these principles without ever swinging a club!

A fundamental of golf not always taught, is a pre shot routine. This is a golf strategy that every player should master, yet many do not. A pre shot routine is simply the process of the action taken before swinging at the ball. Part of this routine will be the visualization mentioned above, your mental perception of where you want to ball to fly. The other part of your routine will be spent on the ASP above.

If there is a secret to early success with your golf game, it is this.

Once you have been instructed in the basic swing principles then practice these principles with no club longer than a seven iron. The golf swing with a driver, a longer and heavier club, shouldn't be any different in its fundamentals than the swing with the shorter, easier to control clubs.

An interesting fact known to most instructors, but not most golfers, is that the player makes the same mistakes with the shorter clubs as the longer ones. Accordingly, it is easier and more practical to learn the golf swing with clubs such as the 8 or 7 iron. Practice mini-swings, 30-40 yard pitch shots for feel. Using this short swing process, you can actually visualize the clubs positions, be sensitive to your grip tension and actually can feel your body positions at various times in the swing. This sensitivity to your body motions is much more difficult to achieve with the heavier golf clubs.

Your goal in the instruction process is to integrate the physical moves with a feel for the tempo, and rhythmn required to strike the golf ball successfully. The short swing makes this process much much simpler and satisfying to golfers of all levels.

The secret: There really are only a few basics. Get professional instruction-use your brain power your "15th club", the mental one and practice with the short irons. Success will follow.
