Two Very Different Lighting Fixtures: The Chandelier And The Ceiling Fan

By: Rick Martin Home | Home-and-Family | Home-Improvement

Whether it's a house or an office you are looking to decorate, details are vital to obtain a certain atmosphere. The colors, the shapes, the curtains, the furniture, the ornaments, everything has to be appropriately chosen for a space in which a person will sleep, receive guests or work. Every room has to have lighting for the activity performed in it. Lighting accessories are very important because they not only need to be beautiful, but practical also. Their purpose is to illuminate and to perfectly blend in with the style of the room. This is why a chandelier for example is perfect for a certain interior, while a ceiling fan with lighting can also be a solution.

When splendid design is the central goal, a chandelier is the preferred element to make a room glamorous and luxurious. The reason is not very difficult to guess: this ceiling mounted fixture with numerous arms spreads the light in a complex attractive way no other illuminating item does. The chandelier is specially designed for large sumptuous rooms to be efficiently illuminated. The earliest forms were used in medieval churches, but later on they became really popular and only the very wealthy homes had them. From the simple chandelier in the form of a wooden cross that had four candle sticks, the design changed into a complex chandelier with curved arms of brass and crystal shapes that reflect the light of numerous candles. Later, electrical lighting gave the chandelier one more advantage - it was no longer impractical due to the smoke the candles created and it also saved the romantic aspect. As it was and still is a status symbol, sophisticated people who own beautiful houses still appreciate the value of the chandelier in an interior design.

If you want to buy a chandelier, the modern age gives you a multitude of choices. Deciding which one suits your taste can be an exceptionally challenging task because the range of shapes, sizes and styles can practically pose anyone in a difficult situation. When it comes to picking an appropriate chandelier, one has to think about the room where it is going to be placed in. Of course, the room has to be an opulent, ornate, vast one, but the main materials of the chandelier ranging from brass, nickel, bronze or iron and glass have to go with the colors and fabrics used for the other items in the room as well. The chandelier has to be tastefully chosen for the magnificent room to reflect style and elegance.

While the chandelier is now used more as a decorative item and not for illumination, the rooms which need to be practical and don't necessarily need to attract attention and admiration have to be decorated accordingly. The items, in an office for example, have to be useful to the persons using them and need not be elegant or extravagant. When it comes to utility, a ceiling fan is very likely to be the leading choice, even if the design is not as eye-catching or as out of the ordinary as the chandelier's.

The ceiling fan is quite a recent invention and the modern one has two properties, which make it desirable for use: the integrated light and the cooling effect. Because it is used to circulate the air while providing also as a source for lighting, the ceiling fan can be a blessing when it comes to reducing cooling costs. This is the advantage it offers in comparison with regular light fixtures. Of course, there is no comparison between a chandelier and a ceiling fan, because each has a different purpose. Yet, because both are very used nowadays and find themselves a place in our everyday life, they both need to be taken into consideration when it comes to lighting, just that they have to be considered for different interiors or style application.

Getting back to the ceiling fan, in selecting it one has to think of several aspects before buying a ceiling fan: shape, size, blade dimension and color, speed control, directional control, remote control, etc. You don't have to think only about whether you are interested in an industrial ceiling fan or a household ceiling fan because this would be rather simple, but about the style that would please you. There are many types that have to be considered because 120 years of development in this industry have really worked for the benefit of the clients. Taste or interior design will again tell you what you want to choose from cast iron fans, flywheel-type fans, direct, friction, gear or belt-driven fans, spinner ceiling fans or art-type ones.

So, if you need an illuminating item, depending on the interior of the building you are about to decorate, there are several options you should think of. The chandelier is without doubt a special and elegant item that only fits wealthy, extravagant halls or tall rooms. On the other hand, the very common yet much appreciated ceiling fan can be very practical for offices that need to cut back on expenses and still care about the comfort of the employees. Even if these two very different illuminating objects have nothing in common, they are both used in contemporary decoration and both present advantages that should be paid attention to.
