Ultraviolet Light Air Purification: Making Strides To Protect Our Health

By: Mary Coyle Home | Health-and-Fitness

As more people have become aware of the pollution that exists, particularly within the larger cities, emissions' testing is required on more vehicles. Although this is helpful, some of the most harmful pollutants are coming from power plants, refineries, incinerators, chemical plants, and cement kilns. The pollutants that sources like this emit include sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOX), smog-forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter, and hazardous air pollutants that threaten the environment and bring about costly health risks for many people that live in these areas.

The federal Clean Air Act has set in place an emissions-based fee structure that requires companies and businesses that emit a high level of pollutants to pay standard emissions fees. However, the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) has recently reported that at least 18 states are charging major air polluters less than the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)-set minimum on Clean Air Act fees. This has short-changed states an estimated $52.8 million which could be used to monitor air emissions, hire inspectors, develop and enforce federal air quality standards, and work at cleaning up the air. As a result of the 18 states not abiding by the EPA's-set minimum on Clean Air Act fees, the health of the general public is being compromised. Because pollution takes a long time to minimize and the enactment of laws can be a laborious process, we must find a way to protect the health of us and our families.

Thankfully, we don't have to subject ourselves to the pollutants that seem inevitable. UV light air purifiers have been proven to remove the specific pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOC's) that are what has been linked to causing a variety of health risks. In addition, the short wave (UV-C) light found in UV air purifiers/clarifiers has been shown to kill or de-activate bacteria, viruses, and other primitive organisms-even if the organisms have become immune to other disinfection methods.

Harvard School of Public Health and the EPA have also attributed several million asthma attacks and tens of thousands of premature deaths from heart and lung disease on a yearly basis from the fine particle emissions found in the air. With proper and consistent use of UV sterilizers we could reduce and even eliminate the health costs associated with these types of illnesses. UV lighting from ultraviolet air purification systems is responsible for generating a safe and highly effective hydroxyl, the natural compound that scrubs pollution from the earth's atmosphere. Hydroxyls and hydroxyl radicals are formed with the UV-C strips hydrogen atoms from water molecules (H2O) forming hydroxyl (OH-).

However, the positive affect of UV light air purifiers reach beyond simply protecting you and your family from harmful pollutants. They also provide UV disinfection by killing germs, viruses, bacteria, mildew, and mold spores such as stachybotrys and black mold, etc as the particles circulate through the UV air purifier and past the ultraviolet lamps.

Since most people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, and sometimes even more than this, it is imperative to protect the areas of our life that are most susceptible to infection and illnesses. Waiting for states to enforce the federal Clean Air Act that has set in place emissions-based fee structures that require companies and businesses that emit a high level of pollutants to pay standard emissions fees to help fund the costs associated with monitoring air emissions, hiring inspectors, developing and enforcing federal air quality standards, and working at cleaning up the air will take some time. However, by using ultraviolet light in the form of ultraviolet air purification systems, we will be able to positively maintain our health and even prevent the risk of contracting illnesses and other health related issues that include asthma as well as heart and lung disease.
