Unbelievable Field Goals

By: Jess Kelm Home | Recreation-and-Sports

Josh Scobee of the Jacksonville Jaguars was able to drill a 59 yard field goal, defeating the Indianapolis Colts without any remaining time in an incredible win today.

While this performance was shocking, it brings to mind a few other unlikely and amazing game winning NFL field goals.

Josh Scobee

After just having managed a comeback, Peyton Manning helped the Colts tie the score by driving them 65 yards for the game. Just as the game looked as if it were destined for overtime, the Colt’s defense collapsed. The result was that the Jaguars were now in field goal range. Before this day, Scobee’s career long was 53 yards however his 59 yard field goal went down in history during this game.

Rob Bironas

The Colts are no strangers to miraculous kicks. This one was in 2006 when, after leading the majority of the game, the Colts fell behind by 17-14 with a Vince Young touchdown pass. Manning’s response was to drive the Colts to the three yard line prior to Adam Vinatieri tying the game with a field goal at 17.

The Titans began their last drive to their 25 yard line and were able to move the ball downfield 33 yards making overtime look inevitable.

Tennessee’s kicker, Rob Bironas prepared for a desperate attempt at a field goal 60 yards away from the posts and made it.

Matt Bryant

Bryant’s second longest kick ever had been 51 yards. However, he soon became a hero for Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers had a 17-0 lead right before the Eagles decided to rally. A touchdown pass by McNabb cut their lead in the 4th quarter to 17-14. However, a 44 yarder from Bryant resulted in a 6 point game.

With 43 seconds left in the game, McNabb got a screen pass to Westbrook who in turn made a 52 yard touchdown putting the Eagles in the lead 21-20.

While it may have seemed over, Matt Bryant had a 62 yard attempt up his sleeve that, once clearing the crossbar, gave the Buccaneers the win.

Tom Dempsey

One of the greatest kickers in the history of the NFL is Tom Dempsey. However, even this kick blew everyone’s mind.

In the 70’s, the goalposts were on the actual goal line. Once Dempsey lined up on the Saints; 37 yard line for his 63 yard field goal, the Lion’s were in disbelief as surely this was fake. What took place was the longest field goal in the history of the NFL.
