Understanding How The Ppaca Will Affect Health Insurance Georgia Policies

By: Sam Dicosta Home | Finance | Insurance

Many insurance brokers are fielding a lot of questions from their customers regarding how the health care reform is going to impact future health insurance Georgia policies. Many health insurance Georgia companies are setting up web sites to provide information to prospective customers, members, and even insurance brokers, who are often the first point of contact for individuals.

There are a lot of unknowns, so effective communication is the key to some peace of mind, and that is what many health insurance Georgia companies are attempting to do, in order for customers to feel comfortable and supported. Most health insurance Georgia companies continue to be committed to helping their members improve their health, to expand access to high quality medical care, and to provide peace of mind to their customers.

Many of the questions center on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), which was signed into law in March of 2010. This is a very complex piece of legislation, and very difficult to understand by regular lay people. However, it does affect every American, and will affect both the public and private health insurance Georgia market. Everyone agrees that a major benefit of this law is that it will expand access to health insurance Georgia plans and benefits to many Georgia residents, and other states residents too, who do not have coverage. This is a very good thing. However, there is concern that there is not an adequate infrastructure for the changes this will cause to health insurance Georgia policies. Also, this legislation may not adequately address health care costs, or improve the quality of health care. There is also a question as to how the reform will affect health insurance Georgia plan premiums.

What we do know is that by 2014, there will be a lot of individuals purchasing health insurance Georgia policies, because every American will be required to purchase health insurance, possibly for the first time. Those who do not do so will be taxed and penalized heavily. Although Georgia is joining a law suit questioning the constitutionality of this requirement, at this time, it is unlikely that the law suit will win out over the federal government. Therefore, Georgia is expecting a large influx of members joining health insurance Georgia plans.

You can get information about how the reform legislation will affect health insurance Georgia plans from your broker, or your insurance company. Coventry Healthcare has a section in their web site, titled Washington Update that discusses health care reform and upcoming changes, particularly those that affect health insurance Georgia plans. Cigna also has developed a new web site, which they call Informed on Reform, to help brokers understand the health care reform legislation. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia also has a web site that provides a lot of information about how health insurance Georgia plans and policies may be affected by the new legislation.

This is not an all inclusive list, but just some ideas of where you can go to get some questions answered about the PPACA and health insurance Georgia plans and premiums, and how these may be affected.
