Understanding The History Of Patron Saint Medals

By: Daniel Marcus Manson Home | Shopping-and-Products

The number of patron saint medals available from Catholic stores online has increased over the years. One of the most popular medals is the depiction of Saint Jude; he is the patron saint of the impossible, and in troubled times, Catholics, and peoples of all faiths, select a saint or some great religious figure who has been deceased a long time to pray too. St. Dominic’s Church in San Francisco, California has a shrine dedicated to Saint Jude.

The Dominicans have cards they pass out to parishioners that say, â€Patron of hope for the difficult and desperate cases,†while in Spanish the cards reads, â€Patrn de la esperanza en casos difciles y desesperados.†No matter how the hope through prayer to St. Jude is said, all who pray to this saint like to have a medal showing their devotion to One who has many established miracles, on file, through the Catholic Church in Rome.

A story that came out of the 1950’s was very interesting: the famous entertainer, Danny Thomas, admitted that he prayed to Saint Jude for help with his career. If he succeeded in his career, he would build a hospital dedicated to Saint Jude to help the sick and dying. Today, this hospital is known as Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Even though this story sounds a like a â€deal†with the saint, it has resulted in hope for many children and adults.

Another popular medal is for Saint Cecilia, as she is the patron saint of musicians; she died in sometime in the 2nd century AD. Since she praised God through song while dying a martyr’s death, she now graces the medals as a Saint for musicians. The popularity of medals for people working in risky businesses and sports has always been seen as a method for keeping the Saint close at all times.

The medals along with rosary beads can be seen adoring many vehicles or on hats and vests. Another reason for the popularity of the rosary beads and medals can be the pricing, not all medals are made from expensive metals, and they are small enough to carry anywhere the person goes. Rosary beads may be made from any metal, wood, or even precious gems, and can be worn underneath clothing to keep the beads or medal close to the heart.
