Underwater Baby Nursery: How To Get That Watery Look

By: Genesis Davies Home | Home-and-Family | Babies-Toddlers

Paint is key when creating an underwater baby nursery, but if you’ve never done a mural before, it can be scary to think about mixing paint colors on the wall! Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as it sounds and there are a few techniques you can use to make sure that your mural looks truly awesome.

Colors

The first thing you need in an underwater baby nursery is the right color scheme. Blues and greens are perfect. You can either use a combination or pick one or the other. Most parents opt for blue because it’s a bit easier to work with.

You’ll need three shades of blue, a rich marine one for the lowest level of the ocean, a medium tone for the middle of the walls and finally, a light blue that will give you the surface of the water at the very top of the wall. You may choose to use this color for the ceiling, as well.

If you’re not confident painting and blending the colors as you go, mark the walls horizontally into thirds. Then do a freehand undulating line to create wavelike sections. Simply fill these in with your paint colors and you’re done. If you want to blend, you can paint the first level of darker blue, then gradually blend in the medium as you get to the next section. Do the same when you reach the area where you plan to meld into light blue. This can take some practice, but don’t worry, if it doesn’t work, just paint over it!

Next up, you’ll want to add your fish, whales, seaweed, etc. If you can freehand these, that’s great! If you can’t, don’t worry, a projector can really help you by giving you guides to trace and then paint in. Or you can use stencils. All of these methods work very well and will let you create a true underwater baby nursery.

To give the room some depth, paint some of the fish with a blue tone, so they fade into the background. The further away a creature is, the more the water between you and the sea critter would block their colors, so keep this in mind. You can paint shadowy whales to make them appear to be far away in the water, as well as plants. This gives the room a more 3D look.

Now that you’ve painted your little one’s underwater baby nursery, you’re ready to start decorating!
