During the 20 plus years I have had the pleasure of working with dogs, I have seen several different types and levels of anxiety in dogs. There are plenty of methods to use in helping to calm your dog's out-of-control hyperactive behavior. One possible means of calming your dog is to use an anxiety or body wrap for dogs, which will be discussed in this article. One type of stress is due to anticipating pain, such as the anxiety brought on by the fear of nail clippers, possibly because a nail was clipped too short at some time causing pain. There is also a type of anxiety over being left alone, also known as separation anxiety. There can be several levels of this anxiety, from continuous pacing, panting and barking to damaging everything in its path in an attempt to find and regroup the "pack". Thunderstorms can precipitate panic in dogs that are normally calm to the extent of sending them crashing through plate glass windows, hiding in dark closets, panting, trembling and totally inconsolable or even running out of control for miles. Riding in a vehicle may also trigger irrational stress in dogs, possibly from having a bad experience on their first car ride. They might have been injured in an accident at some point. Crating in a vehicle is usually the best means of safely transporting your dog. Knowing why a dog reacts with irrational anxiety to a certain event is really not as vital as finding a way to help your dog overcome that debilitating fear. One method of calming a dog during an irrational hyperactive state is by using a tool called an anxiety wrap for dogs or body wrap. The idea leading to this method has been publicly documented in great depth by Temple Grandin, who developed a "hug box" using the same idea of calming pressure on the body. Throughout her early years of living with autism, Temple could not tolerate being touched, yet while at her aunt's ranch as a teen-ager she observed the calmness of a cow while being handled in the confines of a squeeze chute. She decided to make a similar contraption for herself. Temple discovered that the deep touch pressure of the box on her body actually calmed her. It also helped bring her over-reactive senses to a focused plane that she could then deal with and accept. The anxiety wrap for dogs uses this method by way of a body shirt that applies pressure on the nervous system for a calming effect. This alternative and holistic approach to behavior modification can help in easing your dog's irrational stress in most situations, including thunderstorm terror and anxiety brought on by separation from you. It is very important that when using any kind of anxiety wrap you get an accurate measurement of your dog to benefit from the desired results. If the body wrap is too tight, it will only produce irritation and discomfort for your dog. Fitting it too loosely could also irritate your dog and not have enough constant pressure to work properly. So getting the correct measurement on your dog is very important. The method for this is by measuring your dog in a standing position around the girth area, which is the fullest part of the ribcage, with a measuring tape that is either cloth or vinyl. Pull it snug, but not too tight, and don't estimate the measurement. Be exact in your measuring. The anxiety wrap for dogs is an effective tool to help your dog achieve balance, focus, self-confidence, and relaxation. That being said, it will not work for every dog in every situation, just as there is no one tool that will work in every situation for either a human or an animal. You might also notice that it does not altogether cure your dog's irrational panic, but may help to lessen it to an acceptable level. You may also have to use the wrap a few times on your dog to acquire its full effect. With some dogs it works instantly. Some take a little longer to gain the desired calmness and a few don't seem to be helped at all by the deep pressure shirt. The idea is to use whatever healthy methods you can to try and help your dog overcome its hyperactive anxious state. If this isn't the right tool for your dog, there are other means of helping your dog such as canine massage therapy, desensitization, herbal remedies, just to name a few. The important thing is that you not give up on finding a method to help your dog lessen its response to the anxiety issues that are causing stress not only for your dog, but also for everyone involved. Trying something such as an anxiety wrap for dogs may be a very affordable way to ease both you and your dog's anxiety level and readjusting your dog back to a healthy state of well-being.
