Uv Air Purifiers Offer Boundless Benefits

By: Hillary Lane Home |

Dr. Laura Schlessinger, well known for her radio talk show, once made the statement, If you do not have an air purifier, you are the air purifier." In other words, without an ultraviolet air purification system, the particulates that would be destroyed or caught by a HEPA UV air purifier filter instead settle into lungs. Although many have never given a second thought to the quality of indoor air, this air is, in fact, as much as one hundred times dirtier than that outside.

The Environmental Protection Agency, which monitors and sets guidelines for air pollution both indoors and outdoors, has stated that over ninety percent of fine particles breathed in actually come from indoor air. Inhaling these particulates results in a variety of common ailments, including allergies, respiratory infections, headaches, and nausea. Ultraviolet air purifiers offer boundless benefits as they clean the contaminated particulates from indoor air before they can be inhaled.

Allergens are one of the most common air pollutants found indoors. Dust mites, pet dander, pollen, and smoke particles all contribute to allergy outbreaks and asthma attacks, which affect approximately fifty million Americans and lead to frequent doctor and hospital visits. Without an ultraviolet air purification system, these particulates are unavoidable. Even many buildings which have never had an animal present contain cat and dog allergens.

The HEPA UV air purifier filter is extremely effective on these and other particulates. As a fan moves air through the ultraviolet air purifier, allergens are captured and, being trapped, they cannot again enter the air. Depending on how dirty the air in a building is, the filter often lasts several years, making the ultraviolet air purification system exceptionally cost-effective as the need for allergy medications and trips to the doctor are lessened.

Hazardous microbes are also common pollutants in indoor air, especially during fall and winter months when buildings are shut tight against the cold and air inside simply re-circulates, soon becoming stagnant. These are the months when germs, including viruses and bacteria, thrive. Through a sneeze or a cough, infectious microbes are released into the air and eventually breathed in by others. Thus illness spreads rampantly through homes, offices, and public buildings.

An ultraviolet air purifier can stop the spread of these infectious micro-organisms. As microbes pass by the ultraviolet light of a purification system, their DNA is mutilated, making it impossible for them to reproduce and grow. The HEPA UV air purifier filter further aids in the process as it captures the hazardous particulates, allowing the ultraviolet light ample time to destroy all micro-organisms and render emitted air harmless to human health.

Other particulates polluting indoor air come from vapors and gases. Pets, smoke, food preparation, and chemicals all create odors and fumes that can result in such frequent complaints as headaches, nausea, and more serious ailments. For example, formaldehyde, a common chemical used in many household products and building materials and which is emitted from gas stoves and kerosene heaters, can cause nasal irritation, watery eyes, coughing, severe allergic reactions, and difficulty in breathing.

An ultraviolet air purification system utilizes technology that employs ultraviolet light to create hydroxyl radicals, which neutralize these pollutants, including both chemicals and odors. Powerful hydroxyls, which form when hydrogen atoms in the air's humidity are pulled from water molecules by UV light, are natural to Earth's atmosphere and are an extremely efficient means for destroying vapors, unpleasant odors, and fumes.

When combined with negative ions, which attract positively charged fine particles and pull them from the air, ultraviolet light, hydroxyl radicals, and a HEPA UV air purifier filter come together to form an ultraviolet air purifier that can destroy every type of pollutant in a building. As Dr. Schlessinger alluded, the air purifier does the filtering rather than the person, and headaches, allergies, sinus issues, and frequent respiratory infections often disappear, showing that the benefits of clean indoor air truly are boundless.
