UVA, UVB, SPF, Sun Protection & Best Products to fight it. Ahhh, Summertime! We all want to look and feel our best while spending lots of time outdoors. How do we balance time in the sunshine with the protection we need from harmful rays? Use lots of high SPF sunscreen and you’re protected right? Probably not and here’s why. Several years ago, the Environmental Working Group reviewed some four hundred plus scientific studies and information about sunscreens and other skin care products. This is what they found: *Almost 85% of the 1,014 sunscreen products reviewed offered inadequate protection from the sun or contained ingredients that have their own safety concerns. *More than half of the products, despite labels promising long-term protection, broke down quickly in the sun--in hours and sometimes just minutes--letting in harmful UV radiation *Most sunscreens that say they are waterproof are not. *Those that say they will protect you all day don’t--unless you apply them continuously. *Over half the products have labels that make false or misleading claims--claims considered unacceptable under draft FDA regulations. *Some sunscreens contain ingredients that have been shown to disrupt hormones, cause allergies, or persist in the body and the environment But, you say, aren’t these kinds of things illegal? Actually, no. The FDA has spent almost 30 years examining sunscreen products and still hasn’t issued final regulations. Congress mandated that final sunscreen safety standards be in place by May 2006. The FDA hasn’t complied. What does the FDA advise instead? That you stay out of the sun between 10 in the morning and four in the afternoon. Really? So what’s a person to do? Something you can do is switch to the products that are the most effective and have the lowest level of potential hazard. This weeks “ KEY” product is Shaklee’s Enfuselle Sunscreen.
