On the Internet, virtual hosting is the provision of Web server hosting services so that a company or individual doesn't have to purchase and maintain its own Web server and connections to the Internet. A virtual hosting provider is sometimes called a Web or Internet "space provider." Some companies providing this service simply call it hosting. Normally, virtual hosting provides a customer who wants a Web site with: domain name registration assistance, multiple domain names that map to the registered domain name, an allocation of file storage and directory setup for the Web site files, e-mail addresses, and, optionally, Web site creation services. The virtual hosting user needs only to have a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program for exchanging files with the virtual host. Advantages of Virtual Hosting: Inexpensive - You can pay low price for shared hosting, depending upon the features of the host. If you don't want to pay for a dedicated server, you can typically find a virtual host for a fraction of the price of dedicated hardware. Technical Support - Virtual hosting providers generally offer round the clock support, providing you with the security of available help when you need it most. Flexibility - You can try a range of features without the burden of long-term commitment. You can also customize your virtual hosting arrangements with the bandwidth and database access that matches your business needs. Security - Many hosting companies have measures in place to keep your site from hackers. They provide many safety features such as security and managerial tools, safety resources and design files. Disadvantages of Virtual Hosting: Limitations - Since you share the virtual private servers with your virtual web hosting provider's other clients, your customers compete for access. As a result, your site may have slower virtual private server’s response times during peak periods and could time out with "Web Site Not Responding" messages as visitors try to browse your pages. Risks - With virtual web hosting, you may end up sharing an IP address with scammers, spammers, or adult sites. Since all virtually hosted sites are treated as a group, it is feasible that you could end up banned from search engines that actively seek to block questionable activity. CPU - VPS hosting is the fact that in some cases the CPU of the main server is not equally shared between all the hosted VPS, meaning that it is open to compromise from rogue VPS, and if done correctly a rogue VPS could easily bring down the whole node if it ends up using too much of the CPU.
