Visit The Heaven For Artists - Sedona

By: James Hunt Home | Travel-and-Leisure | Vacation

Native Americans first settled in Sedona, Arizona, about 6000 years ago. The Hopi Indians, for instance, lived in caves and grew enough food to sustain themselves. Considering Sedona doesn't average much yearly rainfall, this is no small feat. The first white settlers appeared in and around Sedona in 1876. In 1902, when T.C. Schnebly opened up Sedona's first post office and began delivering mail, there were about twenty families inhabiting the area. Schenbly's wife's first name was Sedona, which is what he named his post office and town.

Sedona became a heaven for artists around the 1950's and even today is home to many creative and eclectic types. Here are some interesting facts about Sedona:

-The highest point is Coffee Pot Rock at 5600 feet.
-The lowest point is Oak Creek at 4,000 feet.
-Sedona is visiting by about two to four million tourists each year.

Visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross or take in the beauty of Red Rock State Park. The possibilities are endless and one thing is for sure. You'll want to return as often as possible.
