Visiting Southern California Beaches - Where To Go, What To Pack, And Things To Know

By: Dakota Bressler Home |

Southern California beaches are famous world-wide for their white sand, awesome surf and Hollywood crowds. Before visiting Southern California beaches, however, it is important to research which beach best suits your needs, what to pack before you leave, and any other things you need to know about the area. This will ensure that your California vacations are worry free!

3 Southern California Beaches Not To Be Missed

Malibu Beach is one of the most famous seaside vacation spots in Southern California. Beaches just don't get better than this, especially if you like steep waves and surfing. The abundance of aquatic life makes this a good area to explore for those who want an up-close encounter with the fish.

If you have kids, Santa Monica Beach might be the best option. The waters are usually calm enough to allow for swimming, and there is always something to do in the nearby shopping areas. Kids will adore the pier, which offers games and even a huge Ferris wheel. This beach can be crowded, so keep your kids close as you enjoy the artsy surroundings.

California vacations wouldn't be complete without a visit to Marina Del Rey. If you like boating, Marina Del Rey is one of the biggest manmade harbors in the world, and can hold up to 5300 ships at one time. It's nestled within the Los Angeles city limits, and you can find hotels, beaches, shops and restaurants that are sure to add sizzle to any California vacation.

What To Pack When Visiting Southern California Beaches

Your swimsuit, of course! If you plan to swim, be sure that this crucial item makes it into your suitcase. A day at one of the Southern California beaches will also require sunscreen to keep your skin looking soft and smooth now and in the years to come. A high SPF sunscreen is vital to having an enjoyable trip -- without it, you could spend your time feeling feverish due to a bad sunburn.

Immediately before going to the beach, pack a tote bag with the little items that make things run smoothly. Bottled water will keep you from getting dehydrated, and individually wrapped snacks can keep your kids happy when they start feeling hungry. If you're planning to have lunch on the beach, wrap your meal up so it doesn't get sandy and take a beach blanket or a picnic blanket so you have a place to sit down.

3 Things To Know Before Visiting Southern California Beaches

First of all, find out if there are rules or laws that apply to you. For instance, if you are a smoker, take time to learn if you will be able to smoke on the beach or not. In some cases, parking lots have become designated "smoking areas" because the beach itself is a no-smoking zone.

Secondly, look at all your options and find out which beach matches up to your needs. Families will enjoy beaches that have a more laid-back and child-friendly atmosphere, while the twenty-something crowd will gravitate toward the beaches that offer surfing, volleyball, and other activities.

Thirdly, learn about the attractions near the beach you have chosen. The Malibu Lagoon State Beach offers visitors the chance to see the Adamson House, an historical house which was built in 1930 and which really emphasizes the luxury found in Malibu. There are activities, cultural events, and unique restaurants at nearly all of the Southern California beaches. Plan to spend some time getting to know the quirky soul of the West coast during one of your California vacations.
