To help you, I am giving you an excerpt about VoIP and Mobile VoIP.
What is VoIP?
Voice over Internet Protocol, also known as VoIP allows conversion of analog audio signals into digital data that can be transmitted over the Internet. By doing this, the VoIP has the capability to use a standard Internet connection to make long distance calls worldwide for a small part of what is charged by phone operators or service providers. For the payment of a small Internet service fee, the users can bypass the phone operators entirely and can start communicating directly through VoIP.

Everyone is looking for the ways to cut down the cost of communication, especially that of fixed lines and mobile phone calls. The main reason behind the popularity of VoIP is its ability to save money. According to a market research survey conducted in America, Voice over IP or VoIP is considered to be the best performing industry of the decade. According to survey, VoIP will still be the best performing industry in coming decade (2010 to 2019).
Components of VoIP
To make a VoIP call, you must check following components.
â€An IP network (broadband connection or Wi-Fi network)
â€The device
â€Subscriber terminals
â€Media Gateway

Ways of Using VoIP
5.Computer To Computer
Though, most common but using VoIP through your personal computer is not the only way to avail the facilities of IP telephony. To use Voice over IP on your personal computer or laptop, you essentially need to have a device which is connected to internet. In case of laptop or PC, that device is modem. To start a communication, you (the caller) and the person who you are communicating with (the receiver), both should have fully equipped machines. You both can install software like skype to check, how VoIP works. To initiate a VoIP call, you need to install at least one VoIP software (dialer). If you want to keep your conversation private, you must use a headphone, speaker ;). No kidding, Internet is a serious bizness and we are very bizi people. Once you get a mastery over making VoIP call, you can try your hands on conference call over Voice over IP networks. Not only this, avenues are unlimited my friend.
6.Through LAN
In fact, VoIP can work over a local area network as effectively as on Internet. The only thing that you need to ensure is that the local area network is IP enabled. That means, Internet protocols should be running and controlling packet data transfer on your network. This way you can communicate with a person, over the same network.
7.Phone to Phone
To make a VoIP phone call, you need IP enabled phone. An IP phone looks like a normal phone but it is totally different from the normal PSTN phone. What makes it different from PSTN is its connectivity to a gateway or router.
8.Through ATA
ATA or Analogue Telephone Adapter is a device to connect your PSTN phone to computer or directly to internet. ATA converts the normal voice into digital data packets to be sent over IP or internet network.
Benefits of VoIP
Cost Efficiency- VoIP can be a benefit reducing the call cost and making communication easier. On VoIP, Cost per call is far lower than regular mobile or telephone network. VoIP calls made over an IP networks are proven at least 10 to 20% cheaper than regular PSTN.
Multi- Tasking- VoIP is very unique technology that uses same data network to route the data and voice. Regular PSTN requires separate networks to carry voice and data. So VoIP carries quality voice and data faster than regular PSTN networks.
Free Facilities- IVR (interactive voice response, Call waiting, Call forwarding, automatic redial and other facilities are charged in regular PSTN but free of cost in VoIP.
Multiple Con-current Calls-VoIP supports huge number of con current calls without any need to apply extra lines.
Facility to choose from various options- VoIP can run on Wi-Fi, Internet or any other wireless network.
Facility to choose area code- Regular telephone offers a dedicated unique number for calling. Unlike PSTN, VoIP can be used anywhere on any network, regardless of distances and area or country code. VoIP provides liberty from such restrictions. Huge number of unique virtual numbers can be generated and used for communication.
Issues with VoIP
Latency or delay- Since VoIP runs over internet, it is dependable upon the bandwidth of the Internet/broadband connection. A possible solution to avoid any delay in transfer of the data and voice packets is to opt for a greater bandwidth (more than 256 kbps).
Redundancy- To keep you VoIP services up, it is important to maintain a redundant and scalable infrastructure. For example- UPS backup when power goes off, maintaining more than one broadband connection (in case one goes off, another will start working quickly).
Calling on Emergency Numbers- VoIP uses IP-addressed phone numbers so tracing geographical location of the caller is tough (if using a VoIP number) unless the caller tells its location.
