Wastewater Sampling Equipment: Select The Best!

By: wildco Home | Reference-and-Education | Science

Every industry and municipality requires a wastewater sampler to actively monitor the effluent they are producing. The need for wastewater sampling equipment becomes necessary to save on time and costs and to enable the practice of long-term monitoring.

Wastewater sampling equipment is considered an important tool in monitoring discharges to receiving waters. Today different wastewater samplers are available commercially. This sediment sampling equipments or wastewater sampling equipment differ in various ways including intake design, constituents in the flow stream, velocity of the flow stream and transport velocity. In addition, differences spring from wastewater samplers’ custom designed may built for a single purpose or special sampling application. Generally these applications include high suspended solids, sampling sludge, extreme depths or difficult location equipment.

No single wastewater sampling equipment exists for every sampling application. Therefore wastewater samplers’ selection process is a critical part of any sampling and monitoring process. Wastewater sampling equipment must be able to:

1.Collect and store aliquots in order to accurately reflect the composition of the source being sampled.
2.Collect a sufficient amount to represent the source. However a small enough sample to be handled effectively in the laboratory.
3.Collect samples to properly reflect the concentrations of pertinent constituents in the total discharge.
4.Handle samples after collection in a way that does not significantly alter the samples before analysis.

The main aim of wastewater sampling equipment is to collect samples to accurately represent the body of water being sampled. The laboratory procedures cannot compensate to obtain accurate data if the samples do not reflect actual flow stream conditions. Today many wastewater samplers or sediment sampling equipment may differ in their ability to collects representative samples. Of the several techniques used by wastewater sampling equipments, some deliver samples that incorrectly represent certain pollutants in the flow stream. These variations can be due to various factors such as:

Sample intake design
1.Intake position in the flow stream
2.Velocity of the flow stream
3.Sample transport velocity
4.Simple transport method
5.Vertical distance to travel or lift
6.Constituents in the flow stream and
7.Materials in contact with the sampleY
