Water Damage Restoration- Where Is This Water Coming From?

By: Byron Zoucks Home |

You do not live anywhere near a body of water, so you are confident that you will never have to deal with water damage restoration and a flooded basement. Confident that is, until the morning that you flip on the light and see your laundry basket bobbing merrily along. Dazed, you start down the steps to find your slippers soaking up water just as you reach the bottom step. Yes, you guessed it right. You are now dealing with a flooded basement and all of the issues that it will bring up for you.

First and foremost, you must find out where the water is coming from. Have your pipes burst? Could it be from a major appliance, a washing machine or hot water heater for instance? If there is no obvious breaks or leaks from these, then your problem might be more serious and more involved so be prepared. If for instance, you find the water running down your walls, it might be pipes from further up in the house, possibly those that are running inside the walls. Do you really want to start knocking through plaster in an ill advised attempt to minimize the cost of this flooded basement? Leave anything more complicated than visual inspections to trained professionals.

Once you discover the cause of your need for water damage restoration, you can begin getting rid of the water and assessing any damages that may have occurred. If the water was there for a long time it may have seeped under your flooring which can cause warping and structural issues. If you catch the flooding fast enough, you can minimize the damage caused by your flooded basement. Some repairs to your faulty appliances can be covered by your homeowner's insurance if there is not a warranty, but you will have to check your own policy to be sure. There will of course be exceptions and limitations, especially if the appliance in question is older than a few years.

After finding and repairing the cause of the water, you can work to minimize the likelihood of another flooding. Check connections, hoses and pipes frequently and make sure that your appliances are in good working order at all times. Invest in a water snake, which is a fabric like tube that will absorb ten to fifteen percent times its own body weight in water in no time flat. Another good investment is a sump pump. Make sure that you know how to safely operate the model that you have, and never enter water without turning off other electrical equipment first.

Water damage restoration for a flooded basement is a pain- but it does not have to be the worst thing in the world. With a little careful clean up and some prevention against future mishaps, you can have your flooded basement back to good condition in no time. Be sure to document any repairs that you do or have done for you in case you need to file a claim, and if there is not an obvious source of the water, or the repair seems complicated, then leave it to the professionals.
