Water Removal: Having The Right Equipment On Hand

By: Ramona Weisly Home |

The water removal process consists of has different steps and depending on the severity of the situation, different equipment needs fo the incident at hand.

One of the most important pieces of equipment in water removal is the sump pumps. Sump pumps are sold in varying horsepower ranges; some are available at 1/4 horsepower and 1/2 horsepower configuration. When buying this kind of equipment the primary consideration should be how much water needs to be removed because this is where the size of the motor used will come into play.

For instance, for a flooded basement or a pool at home that needs cleaning may use a 1/2 horsepower sump pump since it is capable of removing three to seven gallons of water per hour.

Another type of equipment that is very handy when dealing with the water removal process is the shop vacuum. This device can be used in many effective and efficient ways. It can even be used on tiles, hardwood, and carpeted or aggregated surfaces. This vac is also convenient to have around in areas of the house that are usually damp with water.

Another simple tool used in water removal is a squeeqee. This is usually attached to a handle that is quite similar to a push broom. The squegee is appropriate for use in the basement, on the sidewalk by the poolside, in the kitchen and bath area, or in the garage. This device can remove voluminous water from an affected area and only leaves a small amount to deal with afterwards. Once you have maximized the use of this tool properly, you can continue now with a mop and a disinfectant to finish the process.
For small puddles, mops are most effective in removing water, especially an industrial mop which comes with a self-wringing bucket. The common use of a mop in water removal is for quick water pickup. Due to the nature of their absorbent fibers, mops quickly take in the water and when you squeeze the mop with its wringer, you can see all the absorbed water come out. Usually after one has used the mop in removing a large amount of water, the mop should be cleaned with disinfectant and clean water.

Some of you may not know this but a towel is also an effective tool. Yes, the common everyday towel can do wonders in assisting you in removing water from your home.

Another simple tool with which to do water removal is a plain roll of paper towels. This simple domestic item can dry small amounts of moisture from a rug, a small spill in the kitchen, or any small amount of water or liquid that spilled out to the floor.

Water removal, while it may sound easy and uncomplicated, actually needs a lot of attention when it's being done because it can ruin your vulnerable possessions.

The tools and methods discussed above are only a few items that can assist in making the home a dry, clean place to live in.
