Ways To Cope With Panic Attacks

By: Brent Cullen Home | Health-and-Fitness | Diseases-and-Conditions

Panic attacks are very common among people in today’s society. They are very frightening to people as they involve intense mental and body discomfort for the individual that is having the attack. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, sweating, accelerated heartbeat, and feelings of acute stress and anxiety. These attacks last an average of 10 minutes to an hour before they subside . For people who are unfamiliar with these symptoms, they may think that they are having a heart attack and they have been known to check themselves into the emergency room at their local hospital.

These attacks are mostly caused by the individual’s mind. There is a remote possibility that physical ailments such as high blood pressure, hypoglycemia, or drug or medication withdrawals may be contributing factors to these attacks, but in most cases, they are not the main cause of the attack.

Studies have shown that people who suffer from recurrent panic attacks usually have a long history of them dating back into their childhood . Several different cases of these attacks begin during high-stress situations that take place at school or as a result of separation anxiety. Later on in life as the child gets older, these attacks take on a pattern of their own.

For most people, panic attacks have real fears , but the main cause for the attack is the panic itself. These people worry in their minds about having an attack and that turns into fear which leads them to suffer an attack.

This pattern of panic attacks is known to happen to people who have generalized anxiety disorder or phobias. One of the best known is agoraphobia which is a fear of open public places, but what it really means is a fear of panic attacks. The individual worries that they will have an attack in a public place and they will not be able to get away from it and thus it will put them into a very embarrassing situation.

Once an individual acquires a panic attack disorder, it is very difficult for them to break the habit and most of the time, they end up having attacks over and over again.

There is some good news on the treatment side of these attacks. There are plenty of medications that a doctor can prescribe for treatment as panic disorder usually accompanies depression, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder. Some people object to medication because they think that their only problem is panic attacks and they believe that taking medication is carrying the situation too far.

There are alternatives to medication such as trying to work out panic attacks in therapy. A trained therapist can talk to an individual and find out the root causes for their panic attacks and then formulate a plan of action to help the individual. Therapists may try methods such as meditation, hypnosis, or deep breathing techniques to break the cycle or ease the symptoms of panic attacks.

Some people choose to treat themselves with herbal supplements such as Ginseng, Chamomile, and St. John’s Wort as they are known to help out with anxiety. With dedication and a strong will to succeed , it is possible to take on these attacks with a calm frame of mind and a clear head.

By gaining control over your fears that typically lead to your panic attacks, you can gain victory and live a more meaningful and healthier life.
