Wedding Favour Ideas

By: Mary Hubbard Home | Home-and-Family

If like so many others, you intend having a wedding reception in one of the Sunshine Coast function centres, then you'll no doubt be thinking how you would like the reception tables to be decorated. Of course, as is to be expected, the more people you invite to the reception, the more expensive it's going to be with regards to table decorations. Fortunately, most function centres on the Sunshine Coast are able to provide you with table and chair coverings, and a good florist will be able to suggest several ideas regarding centre pieces for the tables. One other thing you can do which many people don't realize, is to include the provision of wedding favours on the tables, in order to give an extra personal touch.

Essentially, wedding favours are somewhat of a tradition where the bride and bridegroom provide small gifts to those who have been invited to join them on their wedding day. While these gifts are commonly known as wedding favours nowadays, the proper traditional name is bonbonniere, and it's a tradition which originated from the old European aristocracy. In those days, a bonbonniere was essentially a small box containing sweets such as sugared almonds.

Admittedly, many couples nowadays prefer to follow this age old tradition and give out candy at the reception. But many of these traditions are more country specific. For example, while the Spanish often handout a small vase with a few orange blossoms, many Dutch couples will hand out candy known as 'bridal sugar', which is essentially five pieces of candy representing love, virility, loyalty, happiness, and prosperity. As you can see, even though some people feel obligated to stick with tradition, nowadays it's up to you what you wish to use as wedding favours.

Edible Favours

If you feel you would like to give edible favours then there are an endless number of choices. For example, you could hand out chocolates which you've gift wrapped yourself, together with a ribbon or two, and perhaps even some other form of decoration. In fact, metallic ribbon and flowers lend a certain touch of elegance to a gift wrapped favour. Additionally, you could opt for using chocolate bars which have been made to order. You can have them manufactured in a specific design and wrapped in a wrapper relevant to your wedding.

Whilst not exactly edible, some couples choose to hand out tiny miniature bottles of alcohol. They can make wonderful wedding favours, particularly if you have personalized labels attached.

Charity Related Favours

Even though this custom is relatively new, there's been a huge increase in terms of its popularity. Essentially, charity favours involve donating money to a charity organization, rather than spending it on wedding favours. For example, instead of spending money buying candy wedding favours, you could donate that money to an orphanage, or you can make the donation in memory of someone special. While your guests don't get to receive anything, the loved one you're donating on behalf of will end up being remembered in a very special sort of way. Certain charities will agree to sell some sort of item such as little badges and etc. so that your guests still get an opportunity to take a souvenir home to remind them of the special day. If you're concerned that guests may be to wondering why there are no wedding favours, you could always have small cards printed out with a little explanation, and have the cards displayed on the different tables.

Do-it-Yourself Favours

Interestingly enough, this is an idea that has really become popular largely because of the current economical climate. Basically, DIY favours simply mean that you make your own wedding favours rather than purchase them. For example, you could bake little cakes, compile a CD, or even make use of some form of craft work such as candles.

No Favours

Last but not least, you should never feel under any obligation to hand out wedding favours at your wedding reception. For the most part, your guests will not expect anything, and secondly, rather than spending money on trivial things, you could to put it to better use, such as helping to cover the overall cost of the reception.
