Weddings: A Gateway to Cultures

A wedding is universally believed to be the union of two souls and the souls bonded by means of wedding rings. A person's wedding day is to be a very special day of human life. Planning fiascos, family upheavals and/or the once-in-a-lifetime-joy of marrying your best friend all entail the experience of weddings.

Weddings very much reflect on what is going on around us culturally. Every country exhibits its own special culture through the union of two beings. African American couples were not allowed to legally marry during times of slavery. As a public statement of their love and commitment, with drums beating in the background, a man and woman jumped over a broom "into matrimony." This custom is still practiced among some African American couples to incorporated their rich heritage into the ceremony. In Bermuda a tiny sapling is placed on top of the wedding cake. Afterwards the sapling is planted in their garden, where they can watch it grow along with their marriage. In Egypt, the women pinch the bride on her wedding day for good luck. Then, the bride's family traditionally does all the cooking for a week after the wedding, so the newlywed couple can relax.

The groom ceremoniously presents the bride's father with a whale's tooth as a symbol of status and wealth in the island of Fiji. In India's rich culture, at the close of the wedding ceremony, the groom's brother sprinkles flower petals on the bridal couple. These are believed to ward off evil spirits. Italians believe ribbons symbolize tying together of two lives, so a ribbon is tied across the front of the church door to symbolize the wedding bond. Guests toss confetti (sugared almonds) at the newlyweds, which are also used a table decoration. Ducks, which mate for life, are a part of the wedding procession in Korea to foreshadow the fidelity the couple will have with each other. Moroccan women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding ceremony. At a wedding in Spain, the groom presents thirteen coins to the bride, as a symbol of his ability to support and care for her. With every country across the globe possessing its own special traditions and customs related to weddings, no wedding is complete without such tributes.

Wedding is obviously one happy news people can't wait to share with your near and dear ones. Loved ones give wedding gifts as a reflection of lasting value, great care, and beauty.
