Every responsible diet includes some sort of weight loss exercise plan. Yes, like it or not, we actually have to get off our rears and move around. One of the more efficient approaches to this is to join a gym. Joining a gym is much better than trying to do it alone, there are quite a few benefits... By using their equipment, you save on not having to buy any. Signing up for exercise classes is a good way to stay motivated Plus in classes you'll learn new exercises, get pushed a little and possibly make some new friends. Trainers are provided by most gyms and they can help you design a weight loss exercise plan that is injury free and right for your needs. Overall, there are many perks to gym membership. A membership can have a downside too. Not all gyms are equal. Nor do they all target the same goals. Some are down and dirty hard core muscle palaces where men and women go to bulk up - and nothing else. If you were to ask about a yoga class, you'd be laughed out of the building. Others are nothing more than glorified pick-up joints where finding a hot looking date is the goal, not weight loss and muscle tone. And everything in between. A membership can be very expensive so it's important to check out all the gyms in your area to get the best one to meet your needs. First consideration...is this gym close enough to your home or office? If you have to drive a long way, it won't be long before the commute gets really old and you'll stop going. Not to mention the additional cost in gas. Another consideration is...what's your favorite time to work out? Sometimes our schedules severely limit the times we can go to the gym. Have you checked to be sure they're open? Some gyms have fairly erratic schedules. Be sure THEY will be there when YOU need to be there. One benefit to being a member of a gym is the availability of trainers. If you'll be using one of them, be sure they know what they're doing and have experience. To begin with, just look at them, an overweight trainer is like a smoking doctor telling you to stop smoking! You want someone that can keep you motivated and injury free while designing a program that will meet your needs. Check to see if the gym requires some sort of training. Unfortunately, there are no qualification standards for trainers so be sure the gym insists that they have the skills they'll need. Equipment. What types and how much of each type is available. People tend to do things at the same times of day and one or two treadmills won't hack it. Check the gym at the time of day when you will actually be doing your workouts. Waiting around for a piece of equipment to get free can be very frustrating. Just as bad - or worse - is having a line of people glaring at YOU because they are waiting for the equipment you're using. Do they take care of the equipment? Is it in good repair? Most of the equipment involves lifting weight, sometimes a lot of weight. If the equipment malfunctions or is excessively worn it could be dangerous. Is the facility kept clean? In good repair? Tons of illnesses can spread between the members of a dirty gym. Clean locker rooms happen as a result of having a good cleaning crew. A lot of the better facilities will offer antibacterial products to wipe down a piece of equipment after use. Tripping over weights lying around on the floor is never acceptable. Joining without having an extensive tour is a mistake. Even better, most gyms offer a free or low cost trial. Be sure to take it. This way you can leisurely check out everything - during the hours you like to work out - without a salesman breathing down your neck. Finally, check out the prices. They vary widely. Before you join, check out ALL the gyms in your area. You may find one that is every bit as good as the top ones on the list, but at a drastically reduced price. There are not only differences in the amount each gym charges, there is a difference in the way they charge you. Your credit card could automatically be charged every month, it could automatically come out of your checking account, or you could be invoiced and have to send in a check. Over time, your gym membership will involve a great deal of money and time. It is worth your while to put forth a little extra effort to find the right one for you.
