What An Interior Design Course Should Include

Interior design is part of the world of architecture. Interior designers are responsible for the architectural planning of the environment of the home, workplace, places of entertainment, leisure and shopping.

There is emphasis on aesthetic, cultural, technological, economic and environmental dimensions. The interior designer must also relate to the context, to the design of the exterior of the building, as well as understanding the various materials, colors, systems and infrastructures, bathroom appliances, lighting fixtures, furnishing, etc.

Improvement in the quality of life, an increase in leisure time and technological developments together with economic progress have led to the development of a wider range of demands from architects and interior designers in terms of the well-being of the users, the use of the various modern building materials and the design of living and working space to meet definitions of functional or design requirements.

The Format of the Interior Design Course
The interior design studies offered through the Interior Design and Architecture Course will include the construction of an interior design portfolio and special preparation for the entrance examinations for leading design colleges.

Lectures include planning and exercises in such subjects as history and theory of interior design and furniture, the features and technologies of finishing materials, comfort (climatic, thermal, acoustic, etc.) of furniture and products, colors and textures and general aspects of the design and furnishing of internal spaces
For the planning exercises, the students are required to plan middle-range projects and to prove design skills and technical understanding.

In lectures and exercise emphasis will be placed on the various types of buildings such as educational institutions, residential buildings, hotels, offices, restaurants, religious buildings, and so on.

The course will include a number of study tours around the country to relevant locations.
The course includes 100 hours of study.

Objective of the Program
The objective of the course is to train students in the design of interior spaces and furnishings as interior designers.

The students will study the technical and aesthetic aspects of design, so that graduates will be able to plan interior spaces and furnishing.

Content of the Interior Design Course
History
The history of the development of styles in interior design †from the classical Greek period to the present day. The development of architectural design and furnishings throughout the history of western civilization.

The course will provide definitions, samplings and analysis of the most important styles that have developed and will describe the syntax for an understanding of the importance of architectural style.

Basic Design
A wide acquaintance with the world of design, general concepts in design and basic concepts of graphic design (visual communication), industrial design, fashion design, textile design, jewelry design, animation, art, interior design and architecture.

Knowledge of the basic concepts of the plastic arts, design in general and interior design and furnishing in particular. Getting to know a wide range of materials, the two-dimensional and three-dimensional design of objects, spatial description of them, placing them in a space and taking a critical examination of the work thus created. The course will be structured through a series of exercises that will enable the students to get to know and use various techniques, to acquire ideas and to study the design of objects and of spaces (a storage unit, a decorative door panel, an iron banister, a decorative ceiling and a staircase).

Graphic Drawing and Expression
Explanation of the foundations of graphic thinking and getting to know graphic language for interior designers, study and practice of methods and means of graphic expression.

The language of graphic drawing, two dimensional composition, axonometry, three-dimensional perspective and composition, the drawing and drafting of three-dimensional shapes, light and shade, techniques of work in pencil and colored pencils, rapidography, and water colors.

Theory †Concepts, Ideas and Perceptions in Interior Design and Furnishing
Subjects of study will include: inspiration for planning, architecture as a language, major works of selected architects and designers with a comparison of their unique syntax, various theories of complexity and contradictions in architecture and interior design, the influence of the European environment and local Arab building styles on the identity of interior design in Israel.

Products and Finishing Materials
Getting to know the range of materials and products at the disposal of the planner, options for using them in the interior space, characterization of their special features, techniques for using and combining them.
Stone, marble and ceramics, textiles and carpets, wood and its derivatives, polymers and designated materials, metals and glass, use of color and textures.
There will be lectures and planning exercises, displays of samples by various manufacturers and there will be tours to factories and exhibition halls of leading producers and suppliers.

Furniture
Materials and technologies and ways to use them in creating furniture.

Projects on the planning of various types of furniture:
Portable furniture such as tables, chairs, cupboards. Immovable furniture and built-in carpentry work, such as wall cupboards and various wall coverings, decorative doors and their placement in the space, industrial furniture series †the meaning of manufacture in large series of furniture for offices, educational institutions, etc.

Project †Thematic Studio
Lessons on the project will be given in the form of a workshop with individual instructions and group discussions. In each semester students will be required to carry out at least one project involving the planning and design of all aspects of an interior space. There will be an emphasis on internal division of the space, definition of the nature and style of the space, design of all sidewalls, furniture and accessories including selection of materials, colors and textures.

Sample projects:
Residential apartment †bedroom, kitchen; public realm space such as a hotel room; commercial space such as an office, the lobby of an office building, a book shop, a coffee shop, a bar, or a restaurant.
The project will be presented in the form of planning ideas as well as a detailed plan for execution.
