What Are The Disadvantages Of Reverse Osmosis?

By: Alan Allport Home | Health-and-Fitness

Water filters are certainly a popular home accessory these days and reverse osmosis water filters seem to be a type that is high in the public consciousness. Unfortunately, there are disadvantages of reverse osmosis.

The ordinary tap water piped into your home has way too many pollutants and contaminants in it to make a good long term source of drinking water for you and your family. It is certainly a fact that a reverse osmosis water filter will get rid of a significant proportion of these health-damaging impurities. But, the problem with reverse osmosis is that it also removes health-benefiting minerals at the same time.

So, is demineralized water bad for you? It is certainly a fact that demineralized water is not found anywhere in nature. This certainly suggests that it is not a particularly good idea to be drinking only water that has had all of its minerals filtered out.

The truth is that not everyone agrees that taking the minerals out of water is necessarily damaging to health. But what is undeniable is that mineral deficiency in the body will certainly lead to longterm health problems. Given this, it surely only makes sense to make sure that the water you're drinking provides a significant number of these minerals on a daily basis.

Does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink? Unfortunately the only honest answer that can be given to this question is no. Mainly because the reverse osmosis process doesn't fully remove a lot of the synthetic chemicals that are all too common in tap water.

Does reverse osmosis have other disadvantages? Yes, it does. Because of its very strong filtering characteristics, it wastes a large volume of water that is discarded along with the impurities. The water waste is not exactly environmentally-friendly and it can also lead to an increase in the price you pay for your water.

Another more minor disadvantage of reverse osmosis water filters is that some of the ones that are designed for attaching to individual faucets externally can be unsightly.

So, you can see that, although it is certainly a very good idea to install some sort of water filtration or purification system in your home, there are just a few too many disadvantages of reverse osmosis for this system to be a good idea.
